Mine was remodeled and has the new self-checkout, but as I only go there at 3am after work, it's never open. Fortunately, there are no lines at 3am. The downside is that without the lines, the lone night-shift cashier tends to wander off from his checkstand and sometimes I have to wander around the store to locate him before I can check out...
I did go to an 'original' Carrs (prior Safeway takeover) and it brought back memories (the way it was designed, with the produce area, special food stuff, etc...) This was the Sears Mall Carrs in ANC - Lots of other grocery chains on 'the islands' are older ones too - not all this 'yuppie' mood lighting & thundering water to spray the produce with

There's no self-service at the Lower Queen Anne Safeway, nor the rather seedy U District one either; the asst manager at the former lets me charge my lottery tickets though!

There isn't self-serve in any of the ones down here in the Vancouver/North Clark County/South Cowlitz County area, to my knowledge. But they're remodeling mine as we speak, so maybe...

Actually, interestingly, at least when I lived in FAI in 2006, there were no Carrs (Carrses?)--they were all branded Safeway.
I suspect the reverse happened up there when Safeway bought out Carrs--in Anchorage, they had to get rid of the Safeway stores and Safeway name; in Fairbanks, it was the other way around.
Honestly, I haven't noticed a huge negative change since Safeway took Carrs over. In fact, the new store designs (with things like sushi bars, etc.) and new technology they bring in (self-service check-out), I'd say it might (gasp) actually be an improvement over the old, worn-out looking Carrses that existed 10 years ago.

I live there in the late 90s. They had 2 safeways 1 at the bentley mall(still there) and one at airport way and university(same site new building). There was a Carrs Foodland between Noble and Cushman on Gaffney Rd. When safeway bought Carrs they pulled out of that location. A company called Alaska Market Place came in and they only lasted a few years. As far as I know the building is still vacant

They didn't last long here, either.
But see, it was the other way around, here: Carrs/Safeway got to keep all of the Carrs-branded stores, but they had to sell the Safeway branded stores to someone else to preserve competition (it was Alaska Marketplace who bought them). Sounds like in FAI it was the Carrs that got converted to Alaska Marketplace and the two Safeways stayed around.
One thing I miss about FAI: the creamy Northern Lights Dairy milk you can get there (including, to keep this on-topic , at Safeway). It was far fresher-tasting than Mat Maid ever was. Fortunately, the new Matanuska Creamery milk comes close, but nothing beats a nice white carton of Northern Lights Dairy milk...

I seem to remember Alaska Marketplace taking over two Safeway stores here in ANC when the takeover happened, too--one in the Muldoon Mall at Boniface and Northern Lights (now occupied by, I believe, the Anchorage School District) and the other somewhere else.
They didn't last long here, either.
