I also wonder if there's more flexibility in retaining the companion certificate if you rebook yourself and the companion immediately after cancelling, while on the phone with the same CSR.
I recall situations where I basically didn't even ask about keeping the companion certificate and just kept the $50+taxes I paid for the companion as a ticket credit for myself (as an MVPG). In part, that was because I had no idea if or ever I'd ever reuse the companion certificate in the one-year window.
The rules say changes *may* result in the forfeiture of the cert, not *will* result in the forfeiture of the cert.
I have had the rules explained to me in the same manner as kaceyellis is explaining them here, but to be fair, I have not ever tried to change a companion cert reservation before and thus have no personal experience in the matter.
Exactly *May* result in forfeiture... as I stated in my original reply post, dependant upon the changes, as if the ticket needs to be reissued, then it *will* be forfeit - if the changes dont result in reissue, then it wont

It sounds as if you are reading the rules and I'm sure that's what they say. However, the reality is that I have done exactly what you are saying cannot be done, and have done it on multiple occasions - most recently a few weeks ago. I canceled a Hawaii trip (F with companion) and reissued for a Newark trip (also F with companion). One might think I just got lucky with a nice csr but since this has happened at least five times without hesitation or mention of any waiver of policy, we must be operating with two sets of rules.
Perhaps we are discussing two different certificates? The Electronic RC201 (ECRC201) isnt ticketed by a CSR at the counter anymore.. its electronic - and done online

This is still incorrect. The rules do allow for reissue.
If the companion ticket needs to be reissued SEPARATELY from the full fare passenger (i.e. they are no longer traveling together) then yes, it will be forfeit. Otherwise, as long as the companion ticket is reissued so that they are still travelling as a companion, it is *not* forfeit. There may be an exception or two to this rule, but honestly, I can't think of one.

CSR = Customer Service Representative ... meaning Res too
No, we are talking about the same electronic $50 companion certificate that I have successfully had reissued and reapplied to a new itinerary on several occasions. The CSRs I referred to are the phone agents at the Gold desk.

Hi
Actually, it would not be forfeit if the companion gets ticketed with another full fare passenger who buys a completely new full fare ticket (does not use the old ticket to buy the new ticket) although the rules remain the same - has to be Platinum B of A etcetc.
But MissyDarling is correct, it CAN be reissued but if its refunded it is forfeit.
