Alaska Air, listen up!
It's probably like the wifi: outsourced to a third party who doesn't care about your status or what cabin you're in. Whereas before there was no incremental cost to AS to provide a Dig-E for free, the onboard media server has an additional cost for every user that connects.

Maybe the cost of carrying additional dige players?

I agree that this sounds like eroding benefits, but in the long run I think more and more of us will have cached entertainment on our devices.

Those carts are loaded regardless of the number of 75K's onboard. Remember they have to plan for both ways in and out of Seattle.

Even though the content may be free thru 1/31 - I presume we will still have to pay for Gogo in order to access it.

No I think this will be like searching alaskaair.com, as some parts don't have a cost.

the servers that supply the content will be onboard the aircraft , so flights to hawaii arent affected like delta. As far as im concerned, anything is better than nothing. AS already said they arent going to put seatback IFE so it was either this or nothing. This really is a big bonus for flights that arent transcon where there is no IFE option until now

Deltas server is on onboard as well. The problem is the link to get to the streaming content, which is on gogoinflight.com page, which doesn't seem to come up if there is no signal. I had the same problem on an AA flight when we went up over Canada.

DL has this same system with servers onboard. The issue is one needs to use gogo to initiate a movie, and this seems to require a terrestrial link.

Nobody has to pay for Gogo to use the new entertainment. You simply connect to the onboard server via Gogo, open a web browser and follow the prompts to access movies/shows. After Jan. 31st we pay for all entertainment a la carte starting at $1.99.

I was confused about this also. At first I thought you would have to be paying for gogo to get the movie/tv show service. Then I reread everything and then got even more confused

According to the press release and the detailed information on the "Beyond" section of the AS website, you have to access the new entertainment system via the "GoGo Video Player" app that first has to be downloaded onto your handheld device.

I went in search of it on the Android Google Playstore. What I found was not encouraging:

It gets less than 2 stars. This does not bode well ...

I'm confused when they say this will be on virtually the entire fleet by April. There are 21 "regular" 737-400s and 14 737-700s in the fleet. Does it mean these planes are getting IFE and power or not?

There is a thread not more than a week or two old regarding info coming out of an investor call (I'm pretty sure it was an investor call). One of our fellow FT'ers attended it and reported the speaker was adamant that all AS 737 birds would get power. I questioned that, but the attendee said that was the story told at the session.
