From what I've seen SEA to Asia has not been very profitable for many airlines. UA used to put its crappiest equipment on it, it was a notorious equipment swap route. If CX had some 787 they would probably be on it by now. CX had more important routes to start like BOS-HKG

There's a few exceptions (such as Boston), but in general, CX longhaul isn't just a 1x per day offering. There's definitely not demand for 2x 777 per day HKG-SEA. The other option would be for CX to run the flight with the A330 (which might be able to do an HKG-SEA), but I'm not sure I can see them running US service without F.

I'm willing to wager that we will have a CX A350-900 in three class service serving SEA beginning in 2015 or 2016.
Back to the OT, I wonder what the load factor is on Hainan's SEA flights.

That would be 1-2 airframes with that config...and in the event of irrops you'd have some unhappy Pax displaced.

To be fair, a CX A330 with J, W and Y is better and more comfortable in any case than a DL A330.
The biggest problem is that an A330-200 is at the very outside edge of it's range, even before you factor in the strong headwinds on the outbound trip. I strongly suspect that DL is either capacity restricting the SEA-HKG flight and/or carrying very little cargo (unless they have so few customers booking it that like the HND flight it's empty without capacity restrictions).
Either way, it's not the right aircraft to profitably run that route.

Oh, and I don't think Delta or CX has the "high gross weight" variant of the A330-200, which means it's even more not the right aircraft for the job.

Why not? CX already runs a few planes to the US without F. I.E. The 2nd daily SFO route and the EWR route.

To correct my earlier comment, however, CX only has A330-300, so that's not an option for them to SEA. They do have the A340s, but those have to hurt a lot to fly (it strikes me that they fly a lot of them on short flights, like TPE, where you don't have to carry much fuel, so the extra engines don't hurt you as much). The three class 77W has 340 seats, which seems like a lot on SEA-HKG. Now, the A350 might make sense, just as the 787 makes sense for HU to SEA.
