Space Bins

Hadn't heard about this previously, did a search and came up empty on the coming of "Space Bins" that will provide more overhead storage space. From the (or an) Alaska Airlines blog site.

Read the article

Talks about how Alaska will be the launch customer and these come from Boeing not a third party like those test bins.

Sounds like they will be a bit better than Project Failure from the other thread.

Can hardly wait. Been meaning to schlep a giant steamer trunk on board to see if it would fit. Should now be able to do it. Save some dough on a moving truck

Dallas News Business

DallasnewsBusiness has an article on this with a chart showing additional 60 more bags capacity vs Pivot bins now on next gen 737's
Alaska Airlines will get the first Space Bins on its new deliveries “as the larger bins come available in late 2015,” the announcement said.

The quote from Mark Eliasen, Alaska Airlines treasurer and vice president of finance: “Alaska is committed to making flying a hassle-free and comfortable experience. The additional storage space will allow our customers to keep their personal items with them in the cabin, which we think they will enjoy.”

Boeing says 737 owners can also retrofit their existing “Next Generation” 737s (the -600, -700, -800 and -900) with the Space Bins.

More carry-on = less bags checked.

Less bags checked = less ground handlers.

Less ground handlers = less opex.

Less opex = happy shareholders.

If they actually have enough room for everyone to have a (legal-size) carry-on, it will be an improvement. The problem now is that everyone is entitled to X amount of baggage yet the bins don't actually hold F*X + Y*X bags. It seems the new bins will work for that, and there are always a few people with just a small carry-on item. It still won't work for those with the zipper expansion bags stuffed to the gills along with their kitchen sink.

Actually, the zipper expanded bags should fit, too, given that they'll be turned sideways such that the expansion will open to the side of the bin. This design lets bag expanders slide but might catch the Tumi et. al. "Continental" rollaboards, which are built shorter and wider to offer more volume.
