Both BA and JL websites can be used to search for CX partner inventory. JL is typically a more accurate engine. BA should only be used on a per-segment basis (in other words, do not search for LAX-BKK, search for LAX-HKG, then HKG-BKK). Note that AS award availability is only for 330 days, the BA engine will show availability to 365 days.
There are mixed reports on getting a CX stopover outside of HKG. By rule, HKG is the only allowed stopover. Stopovers are not allowed on intra-Asia award bookings (you will need a North American segment to be able to book a stopover).
All CX awards except for the intra-Asia award must either originate or end in HKG or North America. If you wish to fly Middle East/India/Europe/Asia/Australia to a CX destination beyond your initial flight to or from HKG that is not a North American destination, it will be two awards: XXX-HKG and HKG-YYY. CX intra-Asia awards do not include a stopover.
CX releases availability close in. If you do a change where you book another cabin and upgrade to F (which often may be the only way to get F on CX), you will be charged the $125 rebooking fee (waived for MVPG+).
*Have the AS CSR perform the search one leg at a time (Transoceanic first). That might yield more results than the whole itinerary at once.*

I seem to recall reading that you can get into the booking management area on the Cathay Pacific website if you join one of their miles programs ( Asia a miles or Marco Polo club) and then log in to the website that way.

Haven't had luck pulling my AS res' up when logged into MP. Its linked to the FF#. Perhaps by calling I can change this number, but didn't have luck online.

Yes. I called and was assigned a window on the HKG-JFK portion; no problem. The agent warned me however that I may be re-assigned if someone needed a baby bassinet or something along those lines. I wasn't really paying attention.
Bottom line: call CX reservations to get the blocked out seats at 1800-233-2742

Cathay was just announced "World's Best Airline" at Farnborough. EK was #4 -- nice to have these redemption options!

I am not surprised. I just finished up a HND-HKG-BKK on an AS award on CX and WOW... just wow. The entire experience was amazing from start to finish. I don't think I will ever be able to fly a domestic US carrier after that (except AS of course). This award was a great use of AS miles too since AS doesn't separate zones of Asia and SE Asia like a lot of other FF programs do, so it's a good value IMHO.

As mentioned above, you can use the Qatar Airways (oneworld/amadeus) site to select some seats (including 1A). Use your Cathay record locator and your name with their "manage my booking" tool.
2A still requires a phone call AND an accommodating agent -HUACA. Solid coverage on this issue in the Cathay Forum.

If you want 2A/K, I would call Cathay no more than a couple weeks in advance, and plan to check in early. I've successfully been assigned 2K before, but on my current reservation for October I've been moved to 2D twice.
Also, the CX web page seems to show 1A/K as booked, even when it isn't. Call Cathay and request those seats, even if the webpage shows them booked.

It is possible, even relatively easy, to get assigned to 2A/K, but keeping it is a problem. Cathay's reservation system will kick you out. It seems like it does an audit every couple of weeks.

Apologies if this is a repeat questions but couldn't find using search.
- Can you book a CX award now for 330 days out and add a 2nd leg (e.g. SIN) a week later?
- Can you upgrade a Y award to J once it becomes available/
- For both, if outside of the 60 day window do they charge you a change fee.

Thanks!
ANSWERED - Called back. 1st Agent couldn't see any availability over a 60 day span and could not do a manual request. 2nd Agent could see availability (mirrored on BA) and book but not for all flights shown on BA/QF. 3d agent did a manual request and picked up seats at the 330 day limit that did not show up initially on her system. Also, 1:30am/1:50am flights JFK-HKG did not show up on her system at all.
