This route will be inauguration effective June 11, 2009. It will be operated for twice daily from ATL-ACY. Hope it would be nice more capacity growth service in ACY.

Well, zippity doo-dah... Don't get me wrong, I'm always glad to see carriers adding routes. But, would really like to see FL add some of the economically-strong, but chronically overpriced midsized markets like GSP.

As someone who lives 25 minutes from ACY, I'm just thrilled to see someone that is flying mainline that isn't NK. I would even connect in ATL to avoid NK.

I live near IAD, family beachhouse is south of Atlantic City. I wish someone would start flying IAD-ACY! The airfare would be worth skipping I-95 traffic and the 5 hour drive.

US used to do BWI-ACY, and CO used to do EWR-ACY. The VP of Reservations for CO told me that they are looking at ACY again, and I would hope they are looking harder after today's news, even if they are not intending to do daily or year-round.

As a long time ACY person, this is welcome news. I never flew Air Tran, but the 90 minute trip from South Jersey to PHL is not much fun. I had heard something was in the works, never really thought of Air Tran. I was actually hoping US came back (not that I like the product) but the route system is convenient, can't understand how they operate ABE-PHL, but can't make $ doing ACY-PHL, or even RJ's ACY-CLT. Anyway, hope it works for Air Tran, I'll certainly try them, CO would be a welcome return as well, I did many a ACY-EWR trip (Dash 8's I think ?), as well as many a ACY-PHL on the old Shorts 360's...good luck Air Tran!

I think the distance between ACY-PHL is closer than ABE-PHL.
Also its a lot easier driving from South Jersey to Philadelphia, NJ Transit train and Greyhound buses are plenty, so that diminishes the need for a connection from ACY to PHL. Between Allentown and Philly, one's on PA roads, however.
This news is great.
ACY for a long time was just viewed as a small city airport, or destinational I suppose for people out of the area into Atlantic City.
However, if done right, it can attract those from the Jersey suburbs of Philly, and one can get into ATL and most destinations quite easily.
ACY is only 50 miles from Center City, and can be competitive to some extent marginally in attracting folks from Camden, Gloucester and southern Burlington county. No bridge toll, cheaper economy parking, less stressful drive than driving Northbound to EWR or JFK, or through Philadelphia,
and there is news also that NJ Transit might have a direct stop to the AC Airport on the A.C. Line, double tracking it, and adding a Woodcrest station stop in Cherry Hill.
So, AirTran can be the dominant domestic airline with trips to ATL, and Spirit Airlines has a direct nonstop to Boston, for some points northbound.
I always thought JetBlue would be a good airline for ACY, but AirTran is good news too.
I always find myself needing to be in the Carolinas. Even though Charlotte isn't that big of a city, perhaps a non-stop Charlotte flight would make sense. Far enough that driving isn't necessarily more economical, and competitive to compete against PHL/US Airways. Right now, USAirways charges over $200 roundtrip as the lowest fare. Even though both cities/metro sizes are comparable and distance from Philadelphia metro is the same, it costs one twice as much to fly to Charlotte because Southwest doesn't fly to Charlotte.

I mean, if PNS and others work for them, why not?
Yeah, that's the reason you want it added... and it has nothing to do with the fact that you're from there.

I think the demand would be soft. One being that the troublesome parts of I-95 are the DC metropolitan area (south of Howard County, MD) and the 12 mile strip in Delaware, only because NJ Turnpike, I-295 and PA I-95 all merge and become one road.
But if you have to factor a party of 4 on a summer month, its a lot cheaper still driving, than buying 4 tickets, airport hassles, and then needing a rental car. A plane ride makes more sense when its > 5 hour drive, though. Anwyays I think those in MD/No.VA would prefer flying to Myrtle Beach or somewhere with nicer beaches over Atlantic City.
An ACY-JFK connection, only because JFK is an international hub would be ideal for Southern NJ, and maybe a ACY-CLT nonstop route would be popular to compete against US Airways/PHL. The Carolinas are over 8 hours away, and often one needs to drive further after Charlotte, or Raleigh within NC, SC or GA. Because Southwest doesn't fly to Charlotte, US Airways has a natural monopoly in the Philadelphia to Charlotte nonstop route.
But Atlanta via AirTran is great step in the right direction for ACY, as one can get to the West coast, or change to Delta for international connections, a huge attraction for getting ppl in Camden Burlington Gloucester, which is 30-40% of Philadelphia's metro area.
Here's a contrary thought from my prior post on BWI-ACY.
AirTran has a nonstop from BWI-CLT.
There is no carrier except US Airways with direct from PHL to CLT, and all the other major carriers have pricey fares.
I don't know the issues of CLT airspace and terminals vs. BWI's...I'm thinking CLT's is more limited, but assuming AirTran getting another flight out of BWI isn't an issue, what if there was an ACY-BWI-CLT route, so that one could get alternately rom the Philadelphia area to CLT?
If one less ATL connection, and this in place, if one two flights can be supported altogether.
Of course, it might just be cheaper still taking Amtrak to BWI, then BWI-CLT, and O&D traffic to ACY will probably still be an issue (but if BWI is the connection city over ATL for one flight it might warrant it)... its just a thought....
It'd also make a west coast flight need atleast 2 stops (BWI, then again ATL...rather than direct ATL), but from a small airport, its not unusual.
Sample fare (mapping out a trip from June 3):
June 22-June 26 from Philadelphia/PHL to CLT.
US Airways
Base fare (before taxes):
$129.30-1 way, lowest fare
$129.30-1 way, lowest fare
Total~260
Amtrak from Philadelphia to BWI
$30-1 way**(cheapest price)
$30-1 way
AirTran from BWI to CLT
$49-web special, lowest fare
$49-web special, lowest fare
Total: ~160
Obviously more hassle taking train and then plane, but $100 can make a difference esp. if a group is going.
