I'm trying to book a one way flight between NY and Atlanta for the coming weeks and the ticket is for $270 but if I book a flight from NY to Chicago the ticket is for $135 with a layover in Atlanta - the city I want to go to.
Since I won't be checking in any luggage so I was wondering if I can break my journey in Atlanta? I called Airtran but they are telling me that I will have to complete my journey and cannot just get off at Atlanta even though I have to change the plane. Does this make sense?

atlantaflyertalk, welcome to FlyerTalk! Although your Q is fine for TravelBuzz as a general inquiry, since you kindly shared with us that your itinerary is on AirTran, let me move this thread to that specific airline forum for further discussion. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator, TravelBuzz.

I don't know any official or legal ramifications to this, but you might want to stop by the gate of the flight departing ATL for Chicago, to let them know you won't be boarding, so that they don't bother paging you.

Thanks rsnash. Earlier my wife called their Atlanta # from our Atlanta # and I guess the person gave her the wrong information because she knew what we are trying to do. This time I called 1800 # and dialed *67 to hide my number and the Airtran employee told me, "We can't force you to take the Chicago flight if you don't want to take it. You are free NOT to board the second flight".
While Airtran may cancel the remainder of an itinerary for a no-show, there does not seem to be any prohibition of hidden city ticketing under their Contract of Carriage. http://www.airtranairways.com/common...f_Carriage.pdf

This is common in markets served by both AirTran and Southwest. Since Southwest does not fly (yet) to ATL, the fare to ATL is always higher. If you are flying from a Southwest city to ATL, you can choose another Southwest city as your destination and (just as you're doing) not board your connector.
Be very careful - if the cancel your NY to ATL they may put you on a flight connecting in BWI (not good).

*67 will not block your number when you call a toll-free (800,866,877, etc.) number. This is a common mis-conception. Just thought you'd like to know.

You can definitely do this and there will be NO problems if things run on-time that day. You probably will NOT receive credit in the A+ program for skipping your second leg (I didn't when I did the same thing). If you have the ability to allow yourself a LONG connection in ATL, do that....this way if your flight is delayed into ATL, they won't attempt to re-route you since you will still "make" the flight out of ATL.
But...is this a roundtrip ticket? Because you run the risk that the return legs of your flight will be canceled.
Airtran does not sell round trip tickets. Only one way's.
The only time you would ever have a problem doing this is if you are checking bags. Bags must be checked to your tickets final destination. So if you get off in ATL there is no problem.
The fares may have a one-way basis, but Airtran most definitely sells roundtrip tickets.
One should book separate itineraries if they wish to do hidden city ticketing on the outbound.
Airtran does NOT book round trip tickets. They book 2 one way tickets in the same itenerary to get a "round trip ticket" but they are not round trip tickets in the way other airlines book "round trip's". One way has nothing to do with the other way. It is not cheaper to book RT or OW. If you are a no show on any part of your one way, it does not cx the other one way. There is NO NEED to book seperate itineraries.

Does that also mean that you can change 1 way of a round trip, pay the $75 change fee and current fare and not disturb the fare of the return?
