Who offers the largest domestic baggage allowance in India?
Hi all,
I would really appreciate some help. recently, I've been enjoying 3 cases with a 69kg baggage allowance between London and Kolkata on British Airways, flying on Club World. Now that British Airways have discontinued the Kolkata flight (as of March), I can take BA to either Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore or Chennai....but then, I need to get to Kolkata.
My problem is this.....my wife, son and I get to India with our 3 cases each weighing 69kg per person (so, 9 cases with 207kg of baggage).......how do we get to Kolkata without paying extortionate excess baggage fees?
Does any carrier have a really generous and flexible baggage policy? For example, Kingfisher First?
I would appreciate your thoughts! Thanks in advance.
i have travelled us-bom to mangalore and have had bags rechecked as long as I was on the same < 24 hr stay in BOM and ONE ticket. When I have bought a
ticket BOM-IXE in bombay, then I have had to pay excess bagage....
I suggest that you buy the ticket in UK as one ticket or if seperate, stay < 24hrs at the connection point.

Even when I had two separate tickets on NW and AI/IC, I was allowed the higher baggage limit on the AI sectors between BKK and DEL, as long as I stayed in BKK less than 24 hours.

I researched this quite a bit last summer as I had a very similar situation to you. What I found out was that if you are flying in from a International destination then 9W and IC will let you check-in what ever your previous luggage allowance was.
All you need to do is make sure that its a connection (within a few hours of your arrival) and show them your inbound ticket with the luggage allowance for the inbound sector.
I flew into MAA and was then allowed my International Business class luggage allowance (2PC) for the seperate ticket on 9W to DEL.
I would suggest emailing 9W and IC and get them to confirm this to you via email as most of the check-in agents won't know about this.

Many thanks!
Many thanks all four of you, especially oliver2002 and lallyr! It will make life a lot easier....and I will email their customer services first, as suggested. By the way, how did you find the 9W leg?
9W is a very good airline. They are much better then IC. Every airline has their own problems, but I feel that 9W manages to deal with the Indian "problems" better then others. IT is also comparable to 9W.
On the MAA-DEL vv sector you should get the newer of the 737's with on demand ife
The 9w and IC/AI allow the -2- pcs allowance on connecting domestic flights if the following conditions are met:
1. Domestic sector is part of the international ticket
2. The stopover is less than 24 hours
3. If Domestic ticket is separately purchased, then it should be full fare, not discounted.
Other than this IC/AI have the most generous luggage allowance:
30 KGS normally and 40 KGS for a member of their FLYING RETURNS membership.

1 & 3. I have flown 9W twice now on a separate issued award ticket (KLM miles) and they have allowed me my International allowance. Even their email did not mention that only certain fares qualify for this. I wouldn't worry about that unless it is something they have started in the last few months.
