Question about [Air India's] seats - JFK to DEL

My son and I are flying from JFK on the 22nd of Dec, and when I called, was told we were 18a and 18b outbound, and 18J and 18K inbound. Apparently they are front row seats in economy. I tried looking up the seat maps, and don't see row 18 as front row. Can anyone tell me whether it IS front row or not?

Thanks,

D

Sorry to disappoint you, but row 18 is not the front economy row in ANY of Jet's equipment.

Not disappointed...I am not a tall person, and was not so sure about being in a seat where the arm-rest won't come up...will be easier for my son...

Wanted to confirm though, it is Air India, not Jet.

Thanks,

D

I have changed the thread title to reflect the fact that the OP's question relates to Air India.

Looking at the seat map on seatguru, it appears row 17 is the bulkhead, not row 18.

Have you tried seat selection online at
http://home.airindia.in/SBCMS/Webpag...ng.aspx?mid=20

Login with your pnr and last name it will give you option to see seat map and change seat selection.

Use IE (no firefox etc.).

This system of AI is crap. You cannot reserve your seats if you are booked on a single flight with more than one segment. For example they sell AI 126 as ORD-HYD but you cant select your seat if you fly that route. And to add to confusion, no error message is displayed too. Just a blank page.

When called to their call center, they say since there is a change of equipment for different segments of the flight, their system cannot handle the reservations, even to the part of the journeys. However if you are booked just ORD-FRA, you can still reserve the seat. Otherwise only on checkin you get a seat.

yes, that's unfortunate. I wonder if it is just due to the equipment change. in that case, you could select seats for ORD-BOM, but not ORD-HYD. However, if you have two different AI flight numbers, you can select seats. You can't choose specific seats on the add-ons (like BOM-HYD), but you can give a preference for window/aisle and also that you would like seats together (if travelling as a group).

but sometimes they do open seating on those short-hops, too (usually when the plane is rather empty).

Even that was not possible. Because you are booked till HYD, you cannot reserve a seat even on the ORD-FRA or FRA-BOM long distance segments. But if you are booked just ORD-FRA or FRA-BOM, you can book the seat.

So basically you have only the left over seats available because passengers to all other destinations than HYD can book their seats. Like passengers to CCU,BLR,MAA etc can reserve the seat because their onward flight has a different number. So passengers to HYD, even though they have to change the flights like passengers to other destinations, will have to adjust with middle row. Thats where the stupidity dominates.
