News: AirBerlin will discontinue flights to Russia

Just came across the news:

AirBerlin will discontinue flights to Russia on Jan 18, 2016

There were 14 flights per week between DME and Berlin
14 flights per week between DME and DUS
4 flights per week between Berlin and Kaliningrad

AirBerlin will continue its partneship with S7.

Hardly surprising. Moscow was always on my list of places to visit, but in the current climate I would rather go to so many other places instead.

Going down is not surprising. But going down from 18 flights to zero sounds quite dramatic.

interesting to see what they do with the planes - I was a bit surprised to see MUC - VIE also suspended (which seemed about 3/4 sold most times I took it); wonder if they are trying to decrease the fleet or if they potentially will reshuffle some of their routes...

I believe Kazan, Samara, Ekaterinburg routes are ceased for now (at least for the winter):
