Update about my lost luggage: AB called me about 27 hours after my flight arrived and told me my luggage was found. It was then delivered to the place I am staying at in Berlin about 5 hours later, or 32 hours after I arrived.
I found a TSA notice in my luggage indicating that it was selected for secondary inspection. So it turns out that it was the TSA who took my luggage out of the flow and probably did not return it early enough to make it on the JFK->DUS flight. I have no idea why TSA would choose to inspect my luggage; apparently it passed muster as nothing was removed from it.
I have no idea really now how to contact AB to see about reimbursing me for about $100USD that I had to spend for socks, underwear, etc while waiting for my luggage. I went to the TXL Lost Luggage counter and they didn't have any better contact information for AB other than their general customer service email address. Oy.

I have an AA codeshare award STL-MIA-DUS in business for 2 passengers, my guess is that we are allowed 4 checked bags (but we only have 3 to check).
Returning DUS-MIA-STL we're in coach, I think we get 2 checked bags and have to pay 150 euro for the 3rd bag.
I think we get nothing for my being OW sapphire.
Right?

- On purely domestic itineraries with flights using the baggage allowance "piece" system – the assurance of at least one piece of checked baggage, weighing up to 23 kgs, even when the regular ticketed allowance has no free allowance.

Just flew AA award ticket on airberlin and wanted to report luggage results. Trip was with 5 people and was routed ORD-TXL-Stuttgart-VCE, and FCO-TXL-ORD. All 5 people had American size rollaboards (which are almost legal for the airberlin standards, but not quite) and a backpack. The goal was to see if we could fly the whole itinerary without checking anything.
ORD-TXL-Stuttgart-VCE was no problem. Probably helped that AA agents checked us in and were the gate agents. Also, no problem with Berlin or Stuttgart, which kind of surprised me, as they are in Germany, and it's been my experience more strict.
FCO to TXL was also fine. On two flights I was asked if my bags were heavy and asked to lift them. I made sure they were all under 10kg, and actually brought a small luggage scale to verify. Both times I lifted the bags easily and the GA said fine.
I thought we were home free, as we were issued a boarding pass all the way to ORD in FCO. However, they wanted to recheck the passports and the counter worker looked at the bags and said he thought they wouldn't fit in the required checker. I agreed and the rollaboards were checked. Once we were in the gate area, I see many other people with bags bigger than ours. While I didn't think our bags met the checker size, it was disappointing and frustrating that we appeared to be selectively enforced for size when many others weren't. There would have been plenty of room for our bags on the 330.
This was the first time in 5 years that any bags were ever checked by me or my family. The final result was waiting only 10 minutes at the baggage carouse and an extra 5 minutes at customs, as there was no line when we arrrived at the baggage carousel. Not bad really. I was thinking more like 30 minutes of waiting when they were checked, and an over 30 minute wait many years ago had started me on a "no checked bags ever" kick.
I think if we weren't a family of 5, he wouldn't have said anything.
YMMV.

When you have a business class longhaul ticket, the european leg is usually booked into an "Eco FlyFlex" booking class, which means you have 2 carry-on bags out of TXL. I had this situation on a paid business class ticket ZRH-TXL-ORD. I´m not 100% sure if this is the same for a business award. 1 carry-on and a personal item is the minimum which you will get, and you might even get the 2nd carry-on allowance out of TXL based on your longhaul business class ticket.

Hi All. Inquiry re: checked baggage allowance for an AA award flight, mixed economy and business (single booking). I'm flying MUC->DUS (Air Berlin, Economy, Booking Code X) and then DUS->ORD (American, Business, Booking Code U). Any idea what I can expect in terms of a checked baggage allowance with Air Berlin? I contacted Air Berlin and they said they don't know. Thanks in advance.
