Seat in PE HKG to AKL would not recline

I had a seat in PE HKG to AKL that would not recline
The crew tried hard to fix it but they could not fix it

Is there any precedent for compensation ?

oes it make any difference that the ticket was a airpoints upgrade ?

If you make contact with NZ the service logs for the aircraft will back up your claim, the crew would of have to report it as an defect.

I've had an issue in the past where I used APD to upgrade to J on a 772 and on the day it was subbed to a 767. I emailed Air NZ (flightcomment at airnz dot co dot nz) and they refunded just under half of the APD. So if they did that just for receiving the same class of service but an inferior product, I'd imagine they'd be fair enough for having a product that didn't work.
