Well I guess this makes it as "official" as it'll be...

Air New Zealand to open new Auckland flagship lounge next week (from AUSBT)

29th September it is (next Tuesday)

Hope that date now sticks, and I'll get a chance to visit it mid-next month (October).

Also and FWIW, AKL PR says of the current AirNZ lounge: "In the short-term the space will be used for airline administration, in the long-term it will revert to lounge space."

You can see the photos here: http://www.ausbt.com.au/photo-tour-a...lagship-lounge

As expected it follows the Sydney and Auckland Regional design very closely, and even has a covered outdoor terrace though the photos don't really show it as an outdoor space. Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh.

And here's a time-lapse video of the new lounge being built:

I wonder if that chef is going to get run over by the cook to order meals. That's a lot of capacity to cater for despite the buffet. Hope he brings his friends! Otherwise I'm hoping the cocktails win me over

It's an interesting concept - louvres can open 2/3 of the ceiling. It seems much more ventilated because of that too. So I suppose you could call it quasi outdoor but it's not open air as such. It means the space can be used all year round.

I was quite surprised that it wasn't open for today's media show'n'tell, seeing as the weather was quite lovely!

That is a nice way to get a bit of fresh air and more sunlight while keeping the area versatile for when there isn't a lot of sunlight. I couldn't make out the louvres in the images before you pointed them out – definitely surprising they didn't show it off at the media event.

These pics better illustrate the ceiling of the terrace area...

There's a central section with wooden slats which remains closed...

... but the ceiling slats at either end can be opened to the elements.

With the ceiling slats open I wonder what the noise levels will be like, after all, airports can be noisy!
