Upgrades and Oneups

I am actively requesting a UA Alliance upgrade from PE to Business on LAX to LHR, NZ2, in a couple of weeks using miles. So far with no success.
1) Will this always be pre-empted by the Oneup system regardless?
2) Could a declined Oneup bid be accepted later if they're not fully loaded?
& 3) Will they entertain same day counter walkup requests if they're only 2/3rds full?

Since this is dependent on I class (Star Business Award) inventory being available I suspect your chances are somewhere between slim and none. There's also no waitlisting possibility either.

1) Not really, it's dependent on award inventory becoming available, which these days doesn't happen.
2) Allegedly per another thread yes, but this is not what NZ state in the OneUp FAQs.
3) For cash money, yes. Anecdotally, SFO-AKL was USD900 for Y-U, and USD3000 for Y-C. I'd expect U-C on LAX-LHR to be around USD2K. There's a printout at the LHR ticketing desk with similar pricing (except in GBP).

Bear in mind *A upgrades don't recognise premium economy, it is only economy-business-first, so even if available, upgrading from PE to BP on NZ using a *A upgrade is a poor use of FF miles (as it would be an economy-business upgrade).

Your best chance is an OneUp using cash of course, if there is appropriate inventory available and our bid beats others including NZ FFs with status who get uplifts on their bids.
