BNZ withdrawing SP accrual on GlobalPlus
Received a letter today from BNZ saying the end is nigh for status point accrual on CC spend with their Global Plus product.
Never relied on CC accrual to maintain GE status but nice to top up for banked years. Looks like only ANZ and Kiwibank CCs left, any recommendations?

Although I benefit from this (although never materially), I would be pleased if it did end. Echoing Xiaotung's post, what sense is there in allowing people to gain status (or a higher status) from buying groceries, or absurdly, paying for flights on rival airlines.

From BNZ Call Centre
So, this being of interest to me, I called BNZ and got this:
1. Internal memo issued 11 April
2. No more status points on gold global plus cards
3. Those on existing gold global plus cards can have a fee-free upgrade to platinum cards for three years
4. Trade-off is that gold cards had a longer interest free period. Platinum's interest free period is up to 11 days shorter than gold
5. No Mention that Platinum cards will lose SP accrual

Would prefer free Air NZ bookings without CC fees, similar to what the BMI credit card offered for BMI bookings.
I have done 32 NZ flights this year with another 14 booked thus far. That's a lot of credit card fees.

The Status Points were the reason I changed to my BNZ Platinum card and I would be sad to lose them. I haven't needed them to get a banked year or 2500 gift but if I have a lighter flying year in future then the SPs I get from my card may make the difference. The argument that you should only get them for flying is valid but I think there is a better argument for dropping SP accrual for those on super-cheap flights (eg $29 night rider). Why should someone on a $58 WLG-AKL-WLG get more SPs than I get for a $300 PMR-WLG-PMR?

You made a valid point too but I don't think it's a better argument. You can think of it this way. By earning Status Points on these flights, you will be enticed to fly NZ not Jetstar. That's frequent flyer programme serving its purpose. Lastly I think your argument is more about competition vs monopoly.
