Early Exit - NZ90

Good Afternoon All

Curious if anyone has any experience with the following:

I'm booked on a super cheap fare week after next on NZ90, ticketed from NRT to AKL. However, this flight is VIA CHC. As I need to get to CHC anyway, I have a separate booking (fully flex, so can be cancelled until day before departure) from AKL TO CHC, however flying into CHC, to fly to AKL and back to CHC seems rater silly.

Talked to NZ, thinking it would be easy to simply get permission to get off at CHC instead of AKL, however apparently it is far from it. Call centre advised twice (just in case I got a different answer second time round) that they could not make any such arrangements, and whilst I would be welcome to get off the flight at CHC, my bags would still go to Auckland as thats where I am ticketed to.

This all seems rather silly as the is no loss to NZ whatsoever for me getting off at CHC. One would think its not that hard to simply tag the bags to CHC. All call centre could advise was that I could try asking at Check-In at NRT and hope......

Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

SSNZ

The fare is from NRT to AKL, not NRT to CHC - that's why you can't just 'jump off'.
You might be able to convince check-in at NRT to only put the bag through to CHC.

If they won't, just enjoy the ride ...

I get that it's ticketed to AKL, what I don't get is why it would be complicated from NZ's perspective to allow me to disembark at CHC.

Other PAX will be disembarking at CHC and there is no loss whatsoever (unless i'm missing something) to NZ for allowing it to happen. It should simply be a couple of key strokes at NRT, and in fairness I don't see why NZ wouldn't just agree to do it and send a message to the check-in people at NRT to make it happen.....

Maybe i'm missing something, but I fly all the time and have done so for some time. I can't recall when I encountered something seemingly so simple not permitted, especially for an 'elite'..... you'd think where there was no cost to the airline they'd be accomodating.

Maybe my expectations are just too high. Frankly though, just a bit shocked the answer wasn't a simple 'no worries'.

This is called hidden city ticketing. Search using that term, you will see that it is not permitted by any airlines, but you can get around it by not checking bags.

If it's the first leg of a return journey doing this will often result in the rest of the journey being forfeit.

Almost always, with almost no exceptions.

Consider also the fare NRT-AKL vs that sold NRT-CHC. At the time of booking, was there a difference that favoured AKL in price terms? An option now is to change the fare to CHC, although if travelling soon fees and fare class availability may make this not worth considering.

At the end of the day, you purchased a fare to AKL, and if you now wish to fly to CHC you must reticket ex-NRT or buy a separate fare AKL-CHC (or take no bags and ditch the final sector).

This really is all about changing the fare you purchased according to the usual fare rules for the specific class you purchased.

Cheers, TK

Since its the end of a return journey, get to CHC. Once in CHC say to the ground staff that you want to be offloaded and they will have to do it!

With no checked bags,sure.

The OP has checked bags. The bags destined for AKL will be segregated from those destined for CHC. I suspect that it would not be a trivial matter to locate and unload and break open customs seals on the AKL container on a customer's whim. Emergency, sure.

Yes they would have to but I doubt that's an ethical thing to do as the airline would be forced to offload your bags at the expense of delaying the flight.

May or may not be important, but I would guess you may well forfeit all SPs if you did not complete the journey.
