Hamiltons Departure Tax, Fair or Unfair???
Even though I live an hour away in Tauranga, I quite often fly out of Hamilton due to cheap fares. Just got one HLZ-PMR on christmas eve for $172 for example ...
I remember the first flight out of Hamilton and hadnt even heard of the departure tax. Is it fair or unfair for Hamilton Airport to charge a $5 fee???

Do any other NZ centres do this?
Palmerston North have done this for years- I think they are getting rid of it soon.
Is it fair? I don't see why not. Every airport charges you somehow, whether it's a direct fee at the desk or landing charges billed to the airline and then passed onto you.
Perhaps who gets what cut of the tax was an issue.
PMR does feel like a bit of a rort though. They claim it's a development tax, but Koru lounge aside, it doesn't look like anything's been modified since the 80s.

Hence the reason why it is cheaper to fly from HLZ than TGA. Still it is an annoyance to have to go to the kiosk or to the bookshop, to wait in line!! I think PMR has dropped the charge already, I think.....

Palmy's dep tax has been gone for a few weeks now!! The tax was to help pay for the international terminal and upgrade of the airport, but how many international flights have there been into Palmy for the last few years?

It is not a tax but a fee, legal definition.
NZ and the airport could not not agree on incorporating it in the ticket prices hence a separate agent, not NZ, collects and verifies payment before boarding.
