AF and EY partnership from 28 October 2012
 
According to Le Figaro this morning, AF and EY are close to announce the signature of a commercial partnership. Code-sharing would come 1st of course but it is not excluded that more could come like financial investment of EY in AF/KL.
As EY has also a code-sharing agreement with AZ, could this new deal make EY closer and closer to Skyteam ?

Après des années de guerre ouverte contre les compagnies du Golfe, Air France-KLM serait sur le point de s’allier avec l’une de ses anciennes ennemies. Selon nos informations, Etihad Airways, la compagnie nationale des Émirats arabes unis, serait entrée en négociation avec le groupe franco-néerlandais pour nouer des accords commerciaux. L’une et l’autre compagnies pourraient ainsi mettre en place un système de «partage de codes». Concrètement, Air France-KLM pourrait ainsi vendre des vols vers des destinations opérées par Etihad, basée à Abu Dhabi, et, en échange, Etihad commercialiserait des billets sur des lignes exploitées par Air France-KLM.
so we may see some new interesting code-shares soon :)

Wow - I knew EY was looking at European airlines, but all the speculation was on Aer Lingus and SAS.

Don't forget that EY now owns almost 30% of Air Berlin - due to enter OneWorld later this year.

EDITED to say: interesting this "development" comes only 3 weeks or so after this story when Emirates and Etihad received permission from France to add an additional 11 weekly flights each to France, and in which AFKL "had pressed the government to refuse any new flying rights to Emirates and Etihad, arguing that lower taxes and airports fees at their hubs amount to an unfair advantage".

This is indeed interesting. Despite the false clichés repeated at nausea by some posters, EY is a 6* airline (AF being 3*) and profitable. This is a collaboration of the carp and the rabbit. iI shows how AF is desperate for cash and confirms that they are abandoning several ME/Asian markets.

I don't think the SkyTrax ratings were under discussion, but rather the more prestigious (and far more accurate) brunos ratings.

Thanks Irishguy28. Etihad is indeed offering a great product in all classes but especially in J and F at reasonable prices. My son just got a ticket to Asia on EY Biz for this summer at a price halfway between Y and PE on AF.
OK, one stopover, but great solo flat bed, great wines and service, etc... as opposed to 13 hours in sardine 777 seating (for 200€ more than AF Y).

Does anyone know the extant of the collaboration?
Someone mentioned that it could explain why AF has basically abandoned BKK and all the touristic destinations it feeds. EY might takeover with AF codeshare.

Nothing has been officially announced so far, except code-share on CDG-AUH, but this is clearly possible. And this is suggested in the following paper (sorry in French) :

Also, even if it's anecdotic, with HM having stopped long-haul flights and EY having taken over flights to SEZ, it is quite sure that we'll see an AF code-share on EY for CDG-AUH-SEZ.

I would be surprised if it were the cause. I would personally expect the agreement to be on CDG-AUH plus middle east codeshare for AF and French/European codeshare for EY in the first instance. Of course, all of us are wondering about possible alliance deal later but as others have mentioned, with EY buying a large stake in AB the signals are certainly confusing on that particular front...

From my understanding :
- AF has trouble on Asian and Middle East leisure destinations (BKK for example);
- EY is not growing as fast as wanted due to EK.

So both airlines would join forces : AF is gonna cut a few routes (AUH, BKK, etc.) and keep those routes through a code share agreement with EY.

AF keeps to have this routes on its network, EY is increasing its load factor.

But meaning AF would only keep BKK as a one-stop?? Honestly I don't see how this can remain competitive against non-stop option such as TG (or why do it this way rather than offer it through KLM if they want to give it up as non-stop from CDG, then at least the money stay 'in the family')

Now, I really do see AF quitting the BKK route for good.
