Just heard from FB, this will only apply to carried over level miles, and not to carried over flight segments...

It will not affect me personally (Mokshu news will ) but I think this is an excellent development. I think it is fair that it affects level miles rather than level segments as there is broad agreement on this forum that qualifying with miles has become significantly harder than qualifying with segments since the absurd April's Fool Day changes...

Great, however as I am not Plat for life this has little use for me, had it been this sort of carry over rather thanthe over 105k carryover (or whatever it was the last 7 or so years) then i would have had to have flown far less to have gotten to Lifetime Plat.

As a note to the above, along with the card they do say that they will be sending a new one every year. As an aside the "FOR LIFE" seems to have been printed on AFTER the card was made and in a slightly different typeface, so I am sure it will rub out even quicker than the rest of the numerals!

So say I fly 50K miles each year, every year. I will make Gold level but carry over 10K the first year. The second year I fly 50K again, and carry over 20K. The 3rd year I fly 50K again, but since 20K were carried over I'll make Platinum that year. Would that be possible?

Not that this would apply to me, I qualify on segments. On miles I doubt I would even make it to silver.

It looks that way. In fact, looks like one can fly 700K miles in one year and qualify for Platinum for life. Not that I will attempt it.

Yes, that is so. The other consequence is that if you were platinum on 70k and fly less the following year and go down to 60k and drop to gold, then you will at least find it easier to qualify back to Platinum the following year as you will start with the +20k. It means that while the soft landing is preserved, the system is fairer to those who, for whatever reason dropped one level but effectively flew the lower level (as opposed to the required '1 mile') on their downgrade year.

I'll be interested to see how it works for my situation.

I didn't fly much with KLM/AF in 2011 (had a lot of business in the UK last year) so only managed to earn around 22000 level miles. However I had carried over 117000 from 2010.

Hence at the start of 2012 my account showed 24000 Level Miles (117000 + 22000 - 115000).

Hopefully this will be adjusted to 69000, leaving me just 1000 miles short for Plat again
Or will the carryover be based solely on miles earned during 2011.

If they introduce this carry-over concept now, I would assume that the first time it will be relevant is for the transition from 2012 to 2013, and not retrospectively for 2011 to 2012.

My understanding is that the adjustment will be based on the 2011 balance and according to the link will take place some time in mid-2012. However, I'm not sure if applies to balances below any elite level (which is what Brobdignag would require based on his/her 2011 balance).

I did qualify for Plat in 2011 based on the miles I earned in 2010 and carryovers from previous years.
I guess I'll need to wait until "mid-2012" to find out

Do you mean mid-2012? Is that on the French language Facebook link?

Just read the facebook link. Yes, it says the rollover miles from the 2011 balance will be taken into account mid-2012. So they start with the benefit earlier than I expected because I thought they would not introduce the benefit retrospectively. Maybe people were so annoyed about the credit card change that they felt they had to speed it up. (At least I have no other explanation for this. Normally you would expect an airline to introduce a benefit only when it serves as an incentive for future behaviour.)

I wonder how many other frequent flyers remember the old RoyalWing FD program? How many people fly very frequently for decades?
