CNN: "Reports said a search and rescue operation was underway around the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha."

Also on CNN Richard Quest is babbling about planes going Oceanic and clearly he has no idea what's going on ...

Le Figaro carries the same "no hope" message from probably the same source. Maybe AFP origin?

Terrible news.

Air France regrets to announce being without new of the AF flight 447 from Rio to Paris with 216 passengers on board, and sharing the anxiety of the families, "said Monday 1st June, a spokesman for the French airline.

An Air France Airbus carrying 216 passengers between Rio de Janeiro and Paris-Charles de Gaulle disappeared from radar screens Monday at 6:00 off the Brazilian coast. "There is no hope," said an airport official.

Instead of searching off the coast of Brazil, shouldn't they be looking more towards off Dakar ?

More news from the NYT/AP:

A Brazilian Air Force spokesman, quoted by The Associated Press, said that the plane disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean and a search was under way near the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha. The plane disappeared about 186 miles northeast of the coastal Brazilian city of Natal and near Fernando de Noronha, the spokesman said.

Probably the most inappropriate of CNN presenters to deal with something as sensitive as this. He's a buffoon, there's part of me that think's he's a "character" rather than a real reporter.

Kinda sad to think of all the families of those on board.

They probably forgot to count the pilots in the original count

It is very unusual for a modern airplane to disappear without any sort of warnings. If it is some kind of malfunctions, there should be at least some sort of mayday call
