Question YYZ: AC Delays due to ATC manpower restrictions?

Fortunately this wasn't my flight...but it looks like the return flight back to Toronto was delayed about 90 minutes due to a lack of ATC staffing...? This is the first time I've heard of this; does anyone else have any info to share?

yesterdays flights showed delays due to ATC/AIRSHOW and there were dozens of small planes on the tarmac. One possibility is they do have same # of controllers as usual but more workload

Ahhh, yeah, that would make sense! On my flight out of YYZ, we had to hold short of runway 06L to let the Red Arrows land, which was a pretty cool chance encounter

While I sat at F96 yesterday I heard the announcement for a long list of cancellations for this reason. Felt pretty sorry for these guys. Luckily my flight wasn't affected.

It’s due to the CNE air show I think?

My uneducated guess is that those airshow aircraft are under the control of YYZ TCA?

I wouldn't be surprised if those in the know are not permitted to say.

This is when listening to ATC gets interesting!

No doubt the CNE airshow has a significant effect on YYZ operations, AC in particular, as well as area traffic handled by Toronto Centre.

OK, so it's only a few days a year - but if you're affected it can be a real PITA.

However, having access to aviation frequencies can be both informative and potentially beneficial.

CNE airshow traffic normally uses a call sign "BOSS CONTROL" and when this is active YYZ traffic is sure to be impacted!
Before anyone asks; NO, AC ground operations at YYZ and other hubs are not normally on aviation frequencies!

I'm here now. I was working yesterday. Just finished 4 12-hr days for the airshow, and now I am back to my normal rotation. Luckily I get 3 days off in a row later this week!

What would you like to know? Specifically......
TV guy and canadiancow like this.
