Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:
1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

I had a 18 hour overnight layover in BKK on the previous routing (with an 8am flight to MEL), so a hotel was in the cards in either case.
I could have changed it to YYZ»TPE»SIN (11 am arrival then 2 am departure on a SQ 333) » MEL and saved more money mostly by bypassing the US taxes and hotel. But a regional SQ 333 2am departure overnight with a long day and night to kill in SIN didn't really interest me.

The trip is for two reasons. First to visit an old friend in MEL, and my partner lives in the NL so maximizing my time there (6 weeks in NL).
If I had time, I would have gone to KIX before MEL (there was routing), and if I was able to leave a day later from MEL I could have done Thai to CPH then hopped down to AMS. LX via SIN was another option. And LO was an option home to YYZ.
PS: when I did the change this morning I got to an agent with one ring (again!), As well, when the agent realized that—unlike she told me—that they would charge my cc the full new taxes and then refund all the old ones, she called me back to apologize and let me know ^

If you are willing to do it in March-April of '18, there is a ton of space. My original routing had two seats available all the way through. One seat opened up a plethora of options.

Good to hear! My in-laws are in the NL too and I hope to do the same routing you have with a stop in Japan. Maybe in 2019 or 2020. Love spending time in the NL

This one actually has me a little confused.
SFO-YYZ-MUC, all AC metal, $11.52 in fees.
U.S. Passenger Safety Fee $7.00
Canada Harmonized Sales Tax $0.52
Canada Domestic/International Airport Improvement Fee $4.00
Is that not WAY lower than typical?
MUC-YYZ-SFO, all AC metal, $131.52.

In the same vein, around CAD 250 for a J round trip to an Italian island. My P fare revenue ticket is around CAD 4500.

Well, if you keep asking why it's so low, someone will find a way to raise it.

Revenue tickets are very similar (though have certain fees that are only applied to revenue tickets), so it's not an Aeroplan issue. I just can't recall ever seeing something this low that wasn't domestic US.

Still, if all you paid to get from SFO-MUC on AC metal is $11.52, great.

Just booked the following for 2 pax, with the assistance of a very helpful agent and only about 15 mins on hold:
YYZ-SEA AC J
SEA-TPE BR J
TPE-BKK TG J
-Stop-
BKK-USM TG J
-Dest-
USM-BKK TG J
BKK-HKG TG J
-Stop-
HKG-TPE BR J
(22 hour connection)
TPE-YYZ BR J
I originally was seeing availability on YYZ-TPE direct on BR but I waited too long and it disappeared on the date I wanted, necessitating the stop in SEA.
155,000 miles, $188.16 fees, and $33.90 phone booking fee per person.
