Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

Pretty nice trip to Australia. Out of curiosity, are you hopping around Europe on way home by choice or by necessity?

Thanks! I am OK with it. South Holland is actually my destination—Melbourne is just a convenient stop on the way to see a friend

One last quick trip to Europe in LH F before baby #2 comes and my adult only travelling days are over for awhile!

YYC - IAH - AC J - overnight
IAH - DFW - UA Y
DFW - FRA - LH F - 9 hour connection to enjoy the FCT and rent a Porsche from AVIS
FRA - VIE - OS J - 2 nights
VIE - MUC - LH J - 2 nights
MUC - FRA - LH J - 6 hour connection to rinse and repeat per above
FRA - ORD - LH F
ORD - YYZ - UA J - overnight
YYZ - YYC - AC J

Total taxes/fees - $1,298 + $30 booking fee - Ouch! That includes $880 of YQ.

Quite pricey but in my mind it is worth it to enjoy a quick trip in comfort especially with the well timed connections to maximize the experience

It would have been nice to get a direct back to YYC from ORD, but United is historically quite stingy with releasing seats except for the absolute last minute.

I came across this post in another forum thread and I'll include the link here.

While we all pay the various charges on paid tickets, for obvious reasons, paying all the additional charges on reward tickets annoys most people more.

It's a fascinating list of international country and flight taxes and codes (the thread title and discussion is less relevant than the list posted). Obviously some of these apply on Aeroplan tickets (and AC paid tickets).

Congrats!^ That's definitely one of the more impressive award bookings I've seen lately.

It would have been more impressive if I could have found a decent 'free' *A routing from NAN to MEL, but I'm not complaining.

The OP, welltravelled88 posted the list in a single post which was valid at the time I linked it here.

I just went back to the thread and saw the mod had merged a few of OP's posts, and now the table is within a quote.

Noticed that UA LAX»MEL has opened up a few days in the end of March 2018, so changed my ticket to this:

YYZ » LAX AC (23 hour layover)
LAX » MEL UA [Destination]
MEL » SIN SQ
SIN » IST TK
IST » AMS TK [Stop]
AMS » ZRH LX
ZRH » YUL LX
YUL » YTZ AC

Saved $204.80 by moving the surcharge from $313.10 to $30. US taxes did give me a bit of a hit, plus exchange as well, but I am more than OK with that. I also arrive nearly a day earlier.

With a 23 hr layover in LA -- are you going to get a hotel room? If so, then that would eat up your savings. Maybe you have friends that you're staying with instead.

I had a 18 hour overnight layover in BKK on the previous routing (with an 8am flight to MEL), so a hotel was in the cards in either case.

I could have changed it to YYZ»TPE»SIN (11 am arrival then 2 am departure on a SQ 333) » MEL and saved more money mostly by bypassing the US taxes and hotel. But a regional SQ 333 2am departure overnight with a long day and night to kill in SIN didn't really interest me.
