Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:
1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

I just booked a flight for two (2) from Toronto to Honolulu, HI this Christmas (80,000 miles total). The breakdown is as follows:
ROE 1.01
XT 20.00
SQ 54.00
YQ 8.47
XY 5.99
XA 12.10
AY 38.96 US
XF 5.45
DEN 4.50
Ended up paying $165.67 per person in total. What's with the $54 fuel surcharge deal anyway? Regular tickets through Air Canada are exempt yet it is re-applied on a reward redemption through Aeroplan?

I'm sure there was (i.e. YVR->ORD->MAD) but I was booking for a friend and the Aeroplan agent said this was the route with the least number of connections. I couldn't have the guy fly home via the US when there was a non stop flight from LHR to YVR.
I'm not upset about paying the fees as I knew I could have avoided them by flying on other * carriers. I'm more disappointed than anything. I should view Aeroplan rewards on AC as access to "discounted" tickets, not as "free" tickets.

I paid $31.50 AP service fee plus $211.90 in taxes for a grand total of $243.40
Routing is: YLW(AC)-YVR(UA)-LAX(SQ)-SIN(SQ)-AKL(NZ)-NAN(NZ)-AKL(SQ)-SIN(SQ)-LAX(AC)-YVR(AC)-YLW
NAN is my point of turnaround.... and I have a stop-over in SIN and YVR.
All flights are in BIZ Class and cost 100,000 miles..

I Think the way aeroplan calculates fuel surcharges on rewards is even if you take a shorthaul AC Flight you are charged the fuel surcharge as if you were on AC all the way to your final destination.
For example if i wanted to fly. YYZ-NYC-LAX-SYD--LAX-NYC-YYZ. All on Star Airlines the fuel surcharge could be ZERO..but if i fly AC on the YYZ-NYC LEG and the rest of the itinerary on Star Carriers I would be charged the fuel surcharge AC charges for a YYZ-SYD-YYZ ticket.. Does that sound right ?
Also i would avoid LH as i think there is somesort of surcharge flying LH..

Unless AE has recently changed the rules again, if your destination is Australia it attracts the Canada to Australia fuel surcharge if you use AC at all, and not the $40 NA segment charge.
There are other destinations that attract the 'origin to destination' fuel surcharge as well...but I'm only familiar with the Australia rule.

BKK-IST
Anyways, did another redemption this week for my wife:
BKK - IST (TK in Y - 70,000 miles)
$14.00 - Thailand Domestic Psgr. Service (TS)
PLUS
$30.00 - Aeroplan Service fee
$ 1.50 - GST
TOTAL: $45.50
Again, no other taxes and surcharges. I wonder if this is similar with other *A FFPs - they only charge for fuel charges when flying on their own metal. My wife is with TG's ROP, on her last redemption, she was charged almost $300 in surcharges (on a flight BKK-DAC [Dhaka]). On TG ROP, redeeming travel rewards on partner airlines (usually?) requires more miles than with AP - but their reward redemption chart is based on actual miles flown - sometimes better, sometimes worse than AP.
On this trip, I would've booked it to NBO (Nairobi) with an IST stop-over (yes another 70,000 miles), but alas, they didn't have availability on one of the days - but I think $795 USD (all inclusive) I paid for that ticket (flying in/into Africa is $$$) is better than redeeming 70,000 miles, since rewards flights from Asia 1 to Canada/Continental USA is just 75,000 miles (and Y tix are roughly $1500, at least that's what I pay for.)
For BKK-DEL over Christmas on TG (50,000 miles), I paid:
$ 5.67 - India Dom. & Intl. Psgr. Service Fee (WO)
PLUS
$30.00 - Aeroplan Service fee
$ 1.50 - GST
TOTAL: 37.17
Another one in 2007: Asia1 - USA/Canada (75,000 miles)
BKK-JFK (TG Y)
LGA-YYZ (AC Y)
YYZ-IAD (UA Y)
IAD-JFK (UA Y)
JFK-BKK (TG Y)
cost me:
$17.00 - Canada Security Charge
$ 1.20 - GST
$82.48 - Taxes
PLUS
$30.00 - Aeroplan Service Fee
$ 1.80 - GST
TOTAL: $132.48
