Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

Hoping for an IRROP on NRT-SIN and getting switched to SQ F
So, it looks like the airline gods were looking out for me and NH decided to introduce an F cabin for NRT-SIN. Did a simple swap over to the NH segment and dropped the UA segment like it was hot, since there are many things that I would enjoy more than flying UA (e.g. picking up dog poop, or having to unclog a toilet.)

Unfortunately, that meant $70.60 in added YQ and a $101.70 change fee.

Screw you Aeroplan for pulling YQ figures out of your ...:

What it should be:

Krug and the wonderful kaiseki on the NRT-SIN hop should soften that pain though.

Love how we still pay a fuel surcharge when oil is under $50.00 barrel
Its not the surcharges you should be mad about - its these fake taxes that AC collects, which are not required on award tickets - only AC knows what they do with the money. A nice scam they have going on transborder tickets.

U.S. International Transportation Tax$42.40
U.S Passenger Facility Charge$5.40

Woohoo another LH F redemption, in time for the family reunion in Hong Kong:

YYZ-YUL AC Y
YUL-MUC LH F
MUC-FRA LH J
FRA-PVG LH F (A380)

The good: Both longhaul LH F segments are showing empty cabins. There's also going to be 7 hours of MUC FCL/FRA FCT bliss.

The bad: Having to connect twice to get to FRA because the direct YYZ-FRA is surprisingly full.

The ugly: $627.56 in taxes ($496.00 YQ) Oh, and YYZ-YUL is on the HD version of the 777. Pray for me I'll get that upgrade.

All of the segments are in Biz.

YXE-YYZ (AC) E90
YYZ-SAL (AV) A319
SAL-BOG (AV) A320
BOG-LIM (AV) A320
LIM-EZE (AV) A321
EZE-GRU (TK) 77W
GRU-BOG (AV) A330
BOG-MIA (AV) A330
MIA-IAH (UA) 738
IAH-YYZ (AC) CRJ7
YYZ-YXE (AC) E90

$350 plus the $31.50 booking fee.

I could have constructed the ticket with fewer segments, which would have reduced the airport taxes in South America, but I’m a sicko when it comes to traveling. I only wish that I didn’t have the IAH-YYZ with AC to reduce the BS fees, but it was the best option that was available to me.

I can't see Hong Kong in your post? HKG might explain that the YQ to Asia is not much different from the YQ to Europe on LH.

I'm stopping for 2 days in PVG before continuing on a separate CX ticket.

I tried doing YYZ-YUL-MUC-ICN-HKG, exact same pricing but it was actually more expensive (I've booked YYZ-FRA-HKG before and charges are in this range - saving the BS NAVCAN fee and domestic German taxes.) I wanted to visit PVG anyways and get the A380, so I went for the first option.

Difference is - that is a real fee - assessed on revenue tickets as well as awards.

The US Transportation Tax and Facility Fee are not real taxes to be collected on awards - they are not collected by the US government - yet AC collects it.

Have a taste of this: Just booked ZRH-YYZ on AC through A3 (oneway) in Y. ...... waste of miles right, scamcharges up the wazoo? Nope. 70$ all in. Can anyone explain this? Wouldn't AC want scamcharges from all partners? This makes no sense...

The operating airline has nothing to do with the scamcharges being collected (otherwise A3 would be eating them here, right? As do UA and AV all the time, right?... UNLIKELY)

The scamcharges go to the TICKETING carrier.
