Fare Question if you buy a M or U.
Lets assume you buy a high fare such as a M or U with instant UG if you have status. These tickets are completely refundable.
So you fly on the first leg but on the return you decide to cancel this ticket and buy a cheaper one way return if available on a less costly ticket still trying to get an u/g using a cheaper fare and a different certificate.
Have you done this, and can it be done? Or are all cheaper tickets based on return and if so would it still not be cost effective.
Thanks.

It would depend on where you are flying to. Within North America it's all one-way fares in any case; outside of North America, it's mostly return fares for cheap tickets. What are you trying to do?
I am not sure one an actually book a one-way fare to/from Europe and thus while U and M tickets may be refundable and cancellable, I don't know that you could buy a cheaper one-way fare as a return. I know I have not been able to book a Latitude fare outbound (to use a SWU with confirmed upgrade) and a far cheaper Leisure or Tourist back because I didn't want to upgrade on the day flight home.

Shareholder--you can buy the two separate o/w M/U fare to Europe and then later book a return cheap fare, refund the second U/M and u/g the cheap fare. Then, not use the return portion of the cheap fare. This should be doable.

Yes but even a cheap return fare would be about the same as a U or M fare given the fuel surcharge. And wasting a SSWU to upgrade on spec when a SWU would do the trick for a few dollars more...not sure the value is really there.
