As a native Haligonian, I too am saddened by the lack of widebody service on YHZ/YYZ... I didn't find out untili I tried to ship a 2.2 m sofa via cargo and found out the only way I could get it out from there to here was via LHR! There has always been widebody service to Toronto for as long as I can remember... it was quite a shock to see it gone. Unfortunately, with the 767 stopping at YYT every day now, I don't think there is enough time to do a complete LHR-YHZ-YYZ-LHR rotation, as that aircraft used to do. YYT-LHR is very popular, but not popular enough to command it's own flight. I believe the morning 767 is now operating a seasonal flight over the Pacific.
However, AC is still offering about 1400 seats each weekday from YHZ to YYZ, just a little less than than last year's sked. Apparently someone in Montreal believes that is a good equilibrium position... I would imagine given the frequency of AC's nonstop service any non-discretionary traveler who wants to fly AC between the two cities probably already is... if we offered anymore seats on the route, I suppose they would have to be priced low enough to coax pax from JetsGo, CanJet or WestJet, or other modes of transport (i.e. pretty low).
As for the US service, I've heard Joe Randall at Jazz is advocating more transborder service from YHZ, but I don't know if Montreal is listening. I believe they are asking YHZ to make the case that there is enough O/D traffic to warrant it, and that the yields are good enough.
All last year I was doing YHZ-LAX roundtrips once or twice a month on CO for about $450 roundtrip all-in. AC usually wanted $550+. However, AC's schedule allowed a red-eye departure out of LA that would connect to a Halifax flight that would get me into Halifax before 11 am. CO couldn't get me home before 4 PM.
