Looking for a cabin resort by a lake, 2hrs or so drive from Toronto
A few years ago we took the kids (3 under 10's) to Lake Chelan in Washington State. We stayed at a small "resort" which was a dozen cabins, a small store, some canoes to borrow on the lake and that was it. We loved it.
Next summer, we're thinking of heading to Ontario and would like to find somewhere similar. I've found a couple of places near Algonquin that fit the bill, but I'm sure there's more around. I'm thinking there are possibly some places towards Ottawa as well?
Would be looking to pay in the region of C$300 a night and we're happy to do all the catering ourselves. (We've found places that run about C$300 per person per night incl food - that's not what we're after.)
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Many thanks in advance
Tony

i will be of little help since the whole cottage thing is not my schtick but i know you need to read up on the various lakes etc. sand entry, rock entry, shallow, deep etc. etc. etc. what time of year (some will have much lower water levels in august etc.), water front or close to water....
the closer it is to Bracebridge, Huntsville, Port Carling, Gravenhurst, the more you will pay. the latter two places, especially.
then again, there are literally thousands of lakes and thousands of peoples cottages on said lakes.
then again, your budget is a little low for a more prime property.

Friends of mine have been staying at this place summer after summer for many years. I've never been, but they love it:

I guess the other challenge is we probably don't want to stay for a full week...

Delmonte in the Pines is on a very beautiful lake with a huge shoreline and self-catering. It has been for sale as the owner is getting on in years and she has closed the dining room and much that made it a general resort. It is on the Trent-Severn Waterway on Sparrow Lake. You won't find anything with so much beautiful waterfront and a great amount of pine forest. And it's less than two hours from YYZ, almost the whole way is on expressways. It's also close enough to shopping and to Casino Rama if you are so inclined. If you want more of a full service resort, try Bayview Wildwood, which is nearby but with a big railroad right next to it.

I would think that the cheapest way to rent and perhaps provide you with more options would be to go through one of the established vacation rental websites, such as www.vacationrentals.com, www.vrbo.com, www.homeaway.ca or airbnb.
