Canadian Landed Immigrant Cards

I hear there is a new card that replaced the old Landed Immigrant papers.

Does anyone have one of these new cards and how do I get one?

They come into effect later this year. Here is the link for information and an application. They will replace the big sheet of paper that used to get stapled into passports.

This is great news for me. I thought I lost my landed Immigrant Status because I have not lived in Canada for the last 4 years. One must have 730 days in the country during the last 5 years to retain permanent Residency status. I thought this would essentially rule me out but according to the fine print:

"time spent outside of Canada will be considered the same as time spent in Canada for residency obligation purposes if absence occured while accompanying a family member who is a Canadian Citizen."

My wife and kid are Canadian.

Nice to know I do not have to reapply all over again to immigrate.

Thanks!

CAUTION!

You MUST be physically present in Canada in order to make the application, and you must collect the card, in person, within 180 days of notification that the card has been prepared.

If you do not do this before 31 December 2003 you may not travel to Canada without a "travel document" which is a visa counterfoil issued at a visa office.

A visa officer might find that you lost your permanent resident status prior to proclamation of the IRPA in June 2002. If that is the case, proclamation of IRPA does not undo what was done. You might have no mechanism to return to Canada.

You should make arrangements to return to Canada sometime in the next 7 months, and make your application for the card--the case processing centre is far less likely to be difficult about absences pre- 28 June 2002.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I will submit my application this July and I'll be back in Canada in August, December and January to pick up my card in person.

Thanks people.
