Hi, all. Though of coming back here to tell the result. We learnt that if one needs to enter Canada with your luggage for the overnight layover, then one will lose that 2 free check-in luggage privilege. Our last trip, which would be from Canada to USA, will be restricted to only 1 free check-in luggage. So, we decided to change our itinerary (oh, with a fee for each member of the entire family). Lesson learnt. Thank you.
Baggage allowance applies for the entire trip.

We so wanted that, too. Maybe, it is true to other type of trip (like shorter duration than over night, or with different airline?). Unfortunately, our itinerary did not allow this. And, we found out that the non-stop direct flight back from Asia to the states opened up for us on a same date, so we changed to that as well.
We had taken the same route back to the states, except the last time it was not the overnight layover and we were all able to return to the states without entering Canada (sat in the gate waiting area for 4 hrs). And we did not have to worry about this luggage episode.
