Round trip...broken into J fare and Y fare?

Has anyone bought two full roundtrip fares similar to these examples:

YYC-YVR roundtrip Jan 1-Jan 15. This will be in Y

YVR-BKK roundtrip Jan 1-Jan 15. This will be in J.

And making sure there is enough time for me to get my luggage in YVR, check-in again, and go thru security for the YVR-BKK. Same with coming back.

I know the AC tango fares (A, L, etc) are non-refundable and it's only a measly 25% AP earned. On top of that, a $25 fee for 1st checked luggage. What else am I missing for fees? I don't have any issues sitting among the masses in Y for a short 1.5h flight YYC-YVR and vice versa.

Dumb idea or...?

Call in to book on one ticket - you can easily do it. All on one ticket over the phone. You will save money on airport fees too at YVR if connecting. Dont break it up into two tickets but if you do leave more than three hours so they have to protect you if delayed.

As far as i am aware the fare rules of the international J segment overrule the rules of tango domestic on one ticket. At least for cancelation fees and fare rules. Unsure about baggage falling under that But maybe?

Dumb idea. J fares should be the same between YVR/YYC to BKK in J. You will pay more by flying Y to YVR and J to BKK.

Addition - I check a few Jan dates and J ticket are actually around $700 cheap out of YYC to BKK than YVR.

Agreed. Without checking, YYC-BKK and YVR-BKK should usually be almost
exactly the same fares. Why would you want to buy 2 separate tickets?
And on one fare you will fly in J for the domestic portion as well.

Booked it today, a combo of Y for the short haul domestic and J for the long haul international, all on one itinerary. Fare, cancellation, change, and baggage rules of the whole itinerary based on J international. No priority stuff (like check-in) when I check in at YYC since my first segment is in Y, which is fine by me. I did forget to ask if my luggage will be tagged priority. Guess I'll inquire that at the AC Y check-in desk.

I wasn't sure if I could get Y and J all on one ticket since I never done that before on a fully paid fare. That's why I was loooking at a possibility of getting two separate tickets.

For the itinerary I wanted (combo of AC, NH, and CX), YYC-BKK in J is $900ish more than YVR-BKK in J. Managed to shave off about $650 by changing the YYC-YVR and YVR-YYC to Y. I'm fine with sitting in Y for 1.5h each way. I'm not a true FT person after all :P

There were other flights for less such as CA and all segments are in J but decided to skip CA.

I still think you are wrong about this - there is no way that YYC-BKK is $900
more than YVR-BKK. This is a case where you should go to a travel agent for
help rather than booking with the airline. The agent's fee will be made up
by your savings and better seating.

Sometimes if there is a super special P fare from YVR or YYZ connecting into those cities in J can cost the equiv of a domestic P or there Abouts. Normal P fare prices work out okay, but those deep discounted ones seem to disallow connections at reasonable prices.

Matrix will tell you.

Mind you, I recently found a fare on Matrix that included one intra-Europe leg, so that aircanada.com would not price it, at CAD 4000. So I booked the other two, transatlantic legs, at CD 3400. Then I phoned air canada reservations to add the missing leg. Initially was quoted CAD 6000 (maybe 8000). I mentioned the fare code from matrix. So the agent calls te fare desk. Comes back saying, OK, I added the leg, fare is unchanged, only some additional taxes. Turned out the extra leg qas in J. But for a leg of just over an hour, CAD 600 less is fine with us.

I have found it never hurts to deal with the fare desk.

On ITA Matrix, still getting YYC-BKK $3939.51 vs YVR-BKK $3027.01. Both itineraries have YVR-(ac)-NRT-(nh)-BKK and BKK-(cx)-HKG-(ac)-YVR (same airlines, dates, times, class)

Main difference is is that YYC-BKK has the following added on:

Fare 1: Carrier AC P7AEL YYC to YVR CAD451.00
Passenger type ADT, one-way fare, booking code P
Covers YYC-YVR (Business)

Fare 4: Carrier AC P7AEL YVR to YYC CAD451.00
Passenger type ADT, one-way fare, booking code P
Covers YVR-YYC (Business)

And ITA Matrix is wrong then, as it often is (or you are not searching properly). The published fares between YYC-BKK and YVR-BKK on AC are identical in business from what I can see. (YYC-BKK is really YVR-BKK auto-constructed with a $0 add-on).

You have ended up paying more for less. A good travel agent would have been able to book this without worry.

Are there routing or extension codes I have to add to Matrix?

I guess there are still secrets I don't know about

That is not the same as YYC-BKK-YYC.

When I tried booking his route on AC's website, it was actual over $700 cheaper out of YYC.
