What is Aeroplan's responsibility during IROPS?
Daughter Lev is on a J reward itinerary YGK-YYZ-GVA-ZRH. Flight out of YGK was delayed due to weather causing her to misconnect in YYZ. She got re-booked YGK-YYZ-MUC-ZRH. When they rebooked her, they put her in Y for the LH segment from MUC-ZRH. J on that flight was wide open but I guess they wouldn't open up a seat in J for her because it was a reward flight.
I don't care other than as a matter of principle, but can someone confirm to me whether or not she/I are able to insit on J for the LH portion on a misconnect if J is available as a revenue ticket - or if there is only Y reward space remaining, can they downgrade her?
Further complicating things, her YYZ-MUC flight just departed - almost five hours late due to a mechanical issue with the aircraft (toilets?) requiring a change of aircraft. Now she is not dealing with a weather delay but a delay that is the airline's responsibility. Does that change anything in terms of her entitlement or lack thereof to J on the LH connecting flight?

1. Aeroplan's responsibility is to refund you a pro-rated number of miles for the downgrade. On that itinerary, it will be negligible.
2. For IRROPS, the responsibility goes to the operating airline, not the travel agent (which is effectively what Aeroplan is).
3. The mechanical issue has no impact on any of this (but it may have an impact on other factors).
I'm surprised she was not offered the YYZ-ZRH flight though.
She SHOULD be entitled to J everywhere. That's just how it works. If she were booked in "P" and it was sold out on MUC-ZRH, she'd still get to sit in J, so the fact that she's in "I" should not matter.
But have a read of http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/air-c...ure-ac-ap.html
I'm Super Elite, they offered me AC J, and I said no. It still took a LOT of pushing to get my originally ticketed cabin. Instead of 1 hour of J, I took a flight that was 5 hours in J. I'd call that a downgrade. But I didn't push for anything. Maybe I should try to get a points refund though

Cow is correct. the operating carrier has responsibility to fulfill her ticket in the fare she has booked, whether paid or on AE miles. We had an IRROPS last month with LH and they rebooked us on another routing but always in the same class.

Right. The only *A carrier I have found to be quite bad with this is Swiss... last year, I was flying F JFK-ZRH then connecting to SQ ZRH - SIN in Suites and I missconnected due to a severe delay at JFK. Well, the incredibly rude staff at ZRH insisted on rebooking me in LX F, and when I remained firm about getting a voucher and being rebooked on SQ R the next day, they refused telling me they could only do J even though I was ticketed in R. To make the long story short, after an hour of arguing and going back and forth, I called them underachievers exhibiting a profound inability to understand basic airline rebooking rules and requested the station manager... needless to say I got a 5 star hotel and rebooked on SQ R the next day. The icing on the cake consisted of me telling them that this would have never happened with the far friendlier, far more professional GVA airport staff.

When in transit, it should be the operating carrier.
HOWEVER, while not I space, I have been put in the situation before that the operating carrier refuses to deal with it because if was X space (in my case, TG), and I had to call AE from BKK to solve the problem.
The bad thing is that I was pissed off at TG for refusing to deal with it (but they agreed to at least document in a detailed fashion in broken airline English -- and it was a gong show because the trip originated in NKG and it was my girlfriend travelling and not me so she had no clue what to do and was at the mercy if incompetent ZH/CA/TG Chinese agents), and then I got to speak to someone in Canada who actually spoke the language that I did so it was easier to fix the IRROPS issue.

But this isn't always easy. It's harder for F with AC ("this flight doesn't even HAVE first class - our systems don't show it") than J.

Correct that when in transit it's the responsibility of the operating carrier to rebook in the same cabin.
I was recently on an I award from MAD-BOG with Avianca (booked with Aeroplan). At check in I was informed of a long delay and I had them rebook me in J on Iberia instead.
It can take a bit of pushing but during IRROPS they should put you on any other flight with availability in the cabin originally booked. Award space shouldn't matter, neither should the routing you originally booked as long as you are asking for flights to the same destination.

I flew CA about 8 times last year domestically and have never found the conditions you speak of. I have always had crews who speak passable English and the lavs have at times been cleaner than I have seen at times on AC. They are far from perfect but not as bad as you are making them out.
