Ignorant speculation: Earn Your Wings #5 -- timing?

As I do EYW for the first time, I realize how dependent my own success is on the precise timing of the contest (when I can get flexible time off, weather, and how foolish I've been in booking trips before the contest period starts).

So... anybody wanna hazard a guess as to when the next one will be?

Fall? I don't think they'd start it until the dust has cleared and the points have been confirmed for EYW 4, in mid-September if I remember right. But there were so few changes between 3 and 4 that they could have yet another one ready to go quickly... as long as it finished before the Christmas leisure travel rush. I remember prairie weather as being very variable in November, though.

Winter? I have flexible work that semester, so *I* would approve, but what normal person would do extra flying to somewhere like ORD or YHZ or YTZ in Jan-Mar?

Does that make it next spring, then? Maybe starting a little earlier?

Speculation is pointless.

1 was spring 2013
2 was fall 2013
3 was fall 2014
4 was summer 2015

They do it when they feel like it

Can someone tell what the gist of it is?

Fly as many segments/miles with qualifying flights and you get a whack of points?

Without revealing state secrets is there some amazing cpm out of it?

Just curious. Thanks.

Cow: where are you on the leaderboard? You are suspiciously absent. Is there a big come-from-behind win coming?

He's currently in 35th place with 20900 wings. Considering that he has 3 visits to YTZ but no badges using them, I have a feeling he's got a bit up his sleeves still. :-)

Apologies if you mentioned this elsewhere. But what's your budget to win this thing?

I can't find the cow's post on this (I think he said he paid about $5K, although I'm sure he'll add more detail later) ... but ALC is on record as paying $4800, for (assuming a top 20 finish) ~600K AP miles - or 0.8 cpm

Sounds like fun actually. But it's time consuming as hell. Maybe twenty years ago I would have done this myself.

The blog indicates that parts of AC seem to be operated at random.

Doesn't canadiancow do upgrades? He would have to buy a Flex ticket. I think his spend is much higher than that!

Can we move discussion of v4 to the v4 thread?

I moved the discussion over to the EYW v.4 thread:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/air-c...dition-50.html

I was partly to blame for derailing this thread which is simply speculating about timing of v.5
