I think AC should fire all it's marketing/promo people. They obviously don't need them. Think of the savings $$$. After all a three year old can copy someone else.

So if you get upgraded on your H ticket, FLYGOLD, will your daughter have to sit in the back?
Well, at least this promo will fill empty seats and make some FFers who can't abide tykes on board even more annoyed when sitting in the back. But mom and dad will have to explain to their sweet things why they won't be getting their Aeroplan for Kids miles for these flights.

That is why I want to see the rules. I agree that theoretically, the free "H" class companion ticket can not upgrade - but let us not make any hasty conclusions on the regulations on this promotion, until we see them in writing, on the Air Canada web site.
If the free companion seat can upgrade, than I will try to get the refund. Of course, if the more likely scenario is that the free companion ticket can not be upgraded, I will be content to forget about this promotion.
In my case, in order of preference, upgrade of both, and also taking advantage of the promotion is the best choice; and the second choice is to pay for both passengers, with the possibility of upgrading (even at the expense of not being able to take advance of the free companion ticket for the child).

SO CALL AC reservations to ask about it and get it done then. So if this is never posted on the website, you would just wait and wait? It's not like you can do this process on the website anyways so I don't know what you're waiting for.
Nice idea even if it was inspired by another... They could have taken the extra step and allowed infants of up to 2 years old to occupy a seat for free* as opposed to the current tariff of 50% of the accompanying adult ticket.
Tried booking a flight on the website engine, including a child. Although the rules say it can only be booked via a T.A. or over the phone, it came up with the childs fare as $44.00 coded as QKID as the booking class.
I didn't take the booking all the way to the purchase point-will it let you buy it online after all?

Yes, you can book this free child fare online. Although it's only limited to the lowest fare or full fare for the adult. That's why I don't know why FlyerGold is waiting for this to be posted on the website since his is a H.
As you found out, the child's fare will be booked in Q class regardless of what class the adult fare is booked in.
Only available on AC's main site because that's a direct link into the main reservatoin system. Destina won't work because it uses Sabre.
(If you book 1 adult and 2 child on AC's website, both child flies for free. You didn't hear this from me. )
She initially thought, from the wording of the regulations that she read on her computer screen, that the free ticket was potentially upgradeable. However, when I mentioned through a contact (without mentioning FT per se) that I found out that the kid's class is in Q class, she looked some other place, and agreed with me - it is not upgradeable.
She stated that all taxes, except fuel taxes had to be paid for the child's ticket.
She stated that one could not book this promotion even through the AC web site - when I told her that my contact was able to do it, that was news to her (she wanted to get the details of the booking, as her computer regulations stated it was only bookable via AC reservations, or a travel agent, not online).
She stated that she does not think this promotion will be posted on the press releases section of the AC web site.
I then asked her, what happens if the adult ticket is a purchased business class ticket. She stated that the regulations stated that the child companion ticket can come from any published fare; however, she could not find in her regulations that the child fare would necessarily not be classified as Q (which does not make sense for a business class cabin seat), or that it would necessarily be classified as either C or J. She could not tell me as to what inventory would the paid and free child seats come from - both J, or both C, or the adult from J, and the child from C.
Finally, I was very creative. I asked if one could combine the SE/E coupon for a paid business class ticket/free ticket (for the second adult), plus a free child's ticket with this promotion.
Of course, there were no regulations on either promotion in her computer file, that stated one could or could not do this. She went to her "supervisor" in the "Lead" dept - and was told one could do that.
I did get identifying pieces of information about her, and her supervisor. I do not feel that it is appropriate to post this information on a public forum; however, if anyone wants this information, I will be pleased to send this information by email.
Finally, my point about promotions that they should be published (when introduced) still stands. The seat sale promotion has been posted in newspapers several times already, and of course it is posted on the AC web site. All the major regulations in terms of what is allowed, and what is not allowed, are quite explicit in those published regulations.
When a promotion is not published, one may not be able to question the agent with specific leading questions (in my case, the specific questions were only asked because of the information posted on FT, and reviewed by me). In that case, the AC agent may not from his/her files be in a position to answer questions on the intricacies of a promotions regulations - therefore, it is quite possible that passengers may be getting inconsistent answers to a give question (eg some agents may have told passengers that the child's ticket is upgradeable, which was the case with the agent when I initially asked her this question - until she looked in more detail at the regulations, after I questioned her about her response, based on the FT comment that the child's fare would be a "Q" class fare).

Too creative? That SE/E cert is only good for travel to Asia and Europe while this promotion only good for domestic Canada. So I don't know why you're mixing the two.

They are 2 different things so it should have been a no.
