There are seats assigned automatically. However they want $20+tax to change them.

Is that what it is nowadays?
I generally book Mrs.acysb87 in J on AE awards.
On the YSB/YYZ portion there is no J cabin. To get her booked in a "preferred" seat is an extra fee. It has been as high as 30.00 requested. I point out a J booking , AE says talk to AC ,AC says an AE booking talk to them. As recent as last week on a flight that Mrs.acysb87 had with me, that still held firm. Seat 1D-F remained empty on dash flight as I chose to sit next to her

Called AC. They said for them to do it I would have to pay. Suggested talking to Aeroplan.

Aeroplan changed the seats.

However when going to the page mentioned above (services.aircanada.com...) seats that are not in Preferred come up as "premium Economy." Go figure. And yes, Premium, not Preferred.

Go figure.

I called the Air Canada Mexico service line, and they assigned them for free, no problem (tried to call AP, but just busy signal).

I had domestic aeroplan bookings. Seats were assigned automatically. Tried to change online (ac), for a preferred seat as an SE. They wanted money. Called aeroplan, they said to call AC to get them to release the preferred at no cost. Called ac and was asked why I called them.
They (ac) finally did change them for no charge.

Inconvenient. Inconsistent.

I want to say that only AC can assign preferred seats for free, but I know it's not true.

I had a booking through Concur. It warned me and said that if I selected a preferred seat without a proper Aeroplan number on file (this was back when every statua got free bulkhead), it would be rejected. I had mine on file, and it worked.

So I really don't understand how Aeroplan can't assign everything.

Perhaps you stop stop trying to understand the inexplicable?

Some religions call these things "mysteries." Meaning that no explanation should be expected. Don't even try asking.

An Aeroplan agent told me they can book the seat if you're on a Business Reward ticket. If you're in Economy, she said you have to call Air Canada.

And who thought this was a way to handle things?

Eh, maybe Stranger is right. LOL
