wow AC is using the 777-300 yyz-HKG

interesting AC has got the 777-300 doing the yyz-HKG nonstop flight at least on Dec 22/23.

I guess CX has taught them the 777-300 planes can make it. This is a great way of increasing capacity on this route. Lets hope AC CANNOT figure out how to put the 777HD on the same route.

I wonder how long till YVR-SYD gets the 777-300?

IIRC there was some dissent on one of the threads with Ben where they talked about increasing the MTOW of the 777-300ER so that it could fly farther to allow AC to fly YVR SYD. The dissent came from the discussion that the 777-300's would become denser post the retrofit...I may be way off base but I faintly recall something along these lines.

777HD would be fun.

15.5 hours in knee-crushing seats with what, 1 lav for every 500 pax?

Psst... YVRSYD and YYZHKG have been 77W since Oct 25/26

I believe AC has modified their B77W to fly further, thus the B77Ws are now used on YVR-SYD and YYZ-HKG. B77L is used to replace/sub B767.

AC tried to teach CX they could make it with all seats filled and actual belly cargo if they used the appropriate longer range aircraft.
Cathay decided a smarter option was to keep pouring money into a dedicated Freighter fleet to fly around the world (including Toronto) in the face of plummeting cargo rates.

Was there an actual mod ?

Or was it a payment to Boeing to get a software certification ?

All 77Ws are created equal.
YYZ is expensive with some costs linked to MTOW.
There was no point in paying fees based on an MTOW that was not required in operation with their 77Ls taking ULH routes. Believe their 77Ws were rated to ~ 740K IIRC?

Adding seats to the 77W and sending them on longer missions mean AC now needs all the lift and will now pay even more in/out of YYZ on their 77W.

Paper certification. I think the only software upgrade for AC 777 fleet available is taking the 77L engines from -110 to -115, which isn't needed. Could be for JNB...

Not necessarily. The agreement with the GTAA in effect Jan 1, 2014 means some fees are fixed for the next 5 years. That could have been one reason AC is upping all 77Ws to 775k instead of only a couple needed for SYD and HKG.

Pretty sure AC was running 77Ws YVR-SYD years ago ... back when they first got them, and before they took delivery of the first 77Ls.

did the plummeting cargo rates come after some airlines got caught price fixing?

I believe this is due to a maintenance issue for the 777-200 ER's on YVR-SYD. The 777-300's low densities are subbing in.

The 777-300's low densities are not flying full YVR-SYD as it affects the lessor range of this aircraft. As a result, it's doubtful we would see the high density version on this route as I don't think the range exists with the payload.

Negative, all 77Ls are operational. 5 are flying at this moment and the 6th is about to depart YYZ-FRA. The change to 77W for a 5-6 month period was a purposeful schedule change months in advance to accommodate higher Australian traffic in the winter (thanks to upped MTOW, now possible) while not needing to fly 1/2 empty 77Ws to FRA anymore, instead using 77L to HND/GRU/BGI/FRA.

The 77Ws are capable of flying 100% full YVR-SYD, no seats are blocked. They can haul a full load of passengers no problem, but occasionally cargo may need to be left behind. Only on days with the strongest winds would that be a possibility.
