Always Fun Fares on AC :(

Looking at YYZ - GIG for next month. AC YYZ-GRU in J is $6,200 return. TAM GRU-GIG is $300 in Y (no J available) for a total of approx $6,500 but as two itineraries. On AC.com YYZ-GRU-GIG for same flights and class as one itinerary $8,500. $2,000 extra for one PNR??? The connect time is 3.5 hrs so separate bookings would not be a problem. UA is $6,500 but with an extra stop in either ORD or IAD. I understand the concept of market pricing but AC is $2,000 above the market price so I am baffled.

No, no...revenue management clearly knows what they are doing. Haven't you read the latest...constantly improving load factors!

Your time isn't worth $1000 an hour?

Actually the flight through CLT was sold out which was too bad as I was interested in trying their new Envoy class.

They do this quite a bit on connect fares.

Recently they also insisted on booking me into tango plus "w" fare on TG which doesn't accumulate mileage. After asking them to remove the last sector (TG after a two day stop in hkg) I was told it would INCREASE the fare by $150...

I don't have words for this.

So dont fly AC if you dont think it is good value.

I am baffled by the recent spate of posts saying either: "route xxx to yyy is so many thousands more than it used to be" or "route zzz to www is so many thousands more than the competition." Who cares? Fly AC or fly somebody that offers you better value. Does anybody think that AC is obliged to offer them the cheapest fare with full status miles and a high chance (guaranteed) upgrade on every route?

I agree whole-heartedly with your sentiment about not flying AC if you don't see the value. However, I'm loathe to discourage posters from pointing out these types of discrepancies - I think it's valuable information. Whether it's presented in a whining or factual fashion matters not - it's the "data" that's important. Perhaps a better solution to your concern about "whiney" posts is to ignore them if they bother you.

Possibly.

I have a bunch of whiny employees this morning so my threshold is low!

Having said that, I find this board extraordinarily negative at times, and these multiple on going threads complaining about AC fare structure is part of that. I agree, the data is useful, but I dont find the overall approach very constructive or informative (give the data on fares usually constitutes about 5% of the actual discussion/complaint).

But fair point.

I travel to Brasil very often and am use to AC's astronomical fee for using TAM to transfer to a city after GRU.

It is almost always more wise to book the ticket to GRU, then book a ticket with TAM to another Brasilian city.

Since GRU to GIG is a very short flight (and fun fact: it's the route with the most traffic of any two cities in the world), you can book Toronto to Sao Paulo with Air Canada, then look for South American alternatives (like TAM, GOL, Avianca, Webjet) for the segment to Rio de Janeiro.

I don't believe any airlines have first class seating for GRU to GIG. With TAM you can
status miles, as you are aware.

This reminds me of last year, when I booked PIT-YYZ-SCL-YYZ for $750 in Y, but YYZ-SCL-YYZ was $1100, PIT-YYZ-SCL-YYZ-PIT was $1400, and YYZ-PIT o/w was $1000. Also, I've never seen the 34 seat Jazz PIT-YYZ more than half full.

Wow, just checked yyz-SYD and difference between T and T+ was 1100-1250 OW. but EWR-YYZ-SYD difference between T and T+ was 400+ OW.

The difference of starting from YYZ vs NYC is about $1000 per OW

Discussed many times - foreign airlines trying to capture each others markets. Similarly, USAirways customers are probably questioning why tomorrow's full Y fare CLT-GIG ($1753.00) is $400.00 cheaper originating at YYZ ($1304.00).
