For the first time in twenty plus years, I bought round-trip tickets on UA for me and my wife for our trip to Osaka, Japan in April.
Our reasons are simple. AC deals are no longer attractive. YVR-Osaka (ITM or KIX) in April on AC is around $1,400 (Tango) and it will get us about 5,000 status miles each. We have no intention of buying Tango + fare which requires roughly $1,000 per person more. UA flights are between $1,250 and $1,400 and they will get us a full 100% Aeroplan miles!! I chose YVR-SFO-KIX for $1,250 each this time.
We will be 50K Elite and 35K Elite on March 01. This is all from our leisure trips all on AC metals over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans in 2012.
From KIX, we will travelling to Hong Kong for fun on NH (All Nippon) Business Class by redeeming our Aeroplan miles. Within Asia, redemption rates and surcharges are still reasonable.
I am giving up one AC privilege - a possibility of getting One Million Mile club membership. That was to come to me in a couple of years if we kept flying on AC metals as in the last several years. Oh well...

I have been AC E for several years (okay, so in the scheme of FF, nothing to write home about). In 2012 I did MRs and extra business travel to meet the 50k threshold.
I'm done. Mr LITW is SE on business travel and we agreed that me chasing status to make the jump from 35k to 50k is stupid. This year, I will nominate my e-ups to him (and cut out any non-business travel) and next year, he can "gift" me the 50k E status.
Sorry Air Canada ... in all honesty, I'm not joining Mr. LITW on any of his TATL travel this year because of the jump in T+ fares. I've done it in past years because it's been economical, but no more. Not worth my hard earned $$.

Same here. It takes some genius to jig your fares and your FFP just so as to cause your customers to book on your competitor. I have already booked a lot more UA flying this year. Will wait and see about how I can use upgrades (I am 75K this year). If I am priced out of them by T+ fares, my miles will go to MP next year as well.

Newsflash -- Air Canada had record passenger loads last year of 82.7% full year including 88.5% on Pacific routes. They probably don't need people who want to pay the lowest price but expect upgrades etc.

Goodbye to Air Canada (Step 1)
I hope some of you have been writing AC about this. It's a real crappy way to treat your FFs. I used Twitter to complain and I know it does not matter, but I still communicated my dislike of their T fare structure directly to them. I plan to tweet AC every time I book on UA this year and tell them how much revenue they lost.

Passenger loads mean absolutely nothing regarding how an airline is doing financially, and AC knows it which is why they like to quote it anyway because it sounds good. But keep feeling good white knighting AC.

Since everyone's complaining about higher fares, then the higher loads aren't results of lowering fares, which should translate to higher profits.

Selfishly if I were you I would have held my nose for two years or whatever it took to reach MM and then jumped ship - it would cost you a few grand extra, but worth it. YMMV.

You know what does have a financial impact to an airline? Giving UG and full status miles to passengers who book the lowest fares.
A negative impact.

No kidding.
Another newsflash to the people here ........ Not all Elites are equal. there are many, many E35s who are more valuable to AC than E50/75/SE.
AC should simply go to a spend-based FFP (they kida are now actually)

Really? Wow, I'm impressed you know this, I didn't know you worked in business development for Air Canada. I'll wait here while you post the cost/benefit analysis of Tango versus upgrades and status miles.
Oh wait, you're just pulling this out of your @$$.
