As a grandfather (and father, of course), I love kids.
BUT, they have no place in a business lounge. Why is this so common now???
Not sure what you're referring to as a "business lounge". Certainly kids are welcome in any MLL. It is common because many people like you (and me) have kids and lounge access.
I'd much rather have well-behaved kids in the lounge than the "sleeping giant" we had to have the concierge evict from the kids' area at YYZ Intl' MLL a few months ago, who had simply stretched out over all five comfy chairs and fallen asleep!

Good lord! Was he running around barefoot in the "Hewlett Packard business centres featuring color laser printing and PC workstations"?
Other than that part of the MLL, the lounges are just exclusive access lounges. Nothing business about them. I'm in them often enough, and never for business.
.... Never thought about taking off my shoes .. er TIVAS... but now I realize that would be much more loungey

I fly enough for the benefit, and will take my family in. End of story. No shoes is a tad severe, but nothing I haven't seen from a boomer with a bald head and a ponytail in a lounge. I love my birkenstocks, but even a kid like me (34) knows better than to take them off to stretch my toes while traveling...

My six year old son has status with the airline.
Why doesn't he deserve to be in there along with everyone else that earned it (and a whole bunch who didn't).
The only kids that should not be allowed in are those that cant be controlled by their parents, and in that case the parents don't deserve to be in there either.
It's not the age, it's the running around, and a little bit the barefoot.
Lack of shoes is a symptom of an overall lack of supervision (or decorum in the case of the shoeless, pantsless adult.)
The parents are responsible for the child, but the lounge staff should be looking out for all of the guests, including those who are bothered by the running around, and also for the inadequately supervised, barefoot running-around child who is just a trip-and-fall or laceration-on-broken-wine-glass-shard away from suing AC.
