I've been looking at booking a trip to BKK for the last 2 weeks of April for some time now but I keep getting sticker shock. Going in Tango and return in Tango Plus is coming in at about $2,500 on the AC website. Travelocity and Expedia have Tango Fares at just over $1,600. Why are the prices so high now? It was like $1,200 in Tango Plus last year.

Good luck finiding Tango plus for cheap.. Not sure where you are departing from but for example, you can leave YYZ on UNITED in that timeframe for 1300 all in, YVR for 1100 , from SEA for 833 .

At the risk of sounding cynical, AC charges that much because they can. I remember plenty of ~$1000 flights to HKG from YEG/YYC/YVR back before TPAC Tango. I somehow doubt $1200 for T+ to BKK from Canada in 2012.
Why not just fly someone else? I see YVR-BKK in Premium Y on both BR and CZ for $2000 and C on HU for less than $3000. If you're looking for absolute cheapest, there's plenty of airlines with decent fares to BKK in Y.
I'm not really sure who is paying for these fares (suspect it's negotiated corp rates and governments), but the T/T+ upsell has been around $1000 rt to asia for about 4 months now.

I suspect it's people willing to pay to play the lotto for an upgrade more than anything and AC trying to price upgrades out of the reach of the "bottom-feeders". If a company is going through the expense of sending people to Asia from Canada they are either going to be slimy low-balls and pay cheapest Y or pay up for C. T+ isn't even a flex fare so I can't see too many companies "negotiating" for AC to send their guys to Asia in discount Y for $2500. AC is making the same amount of money on Tango fares (they're even more than what T+ fares used to be) and they haven't really changed C fares either, so by selling T+ at exorbitant prices they're just raking in free money from people who pay for it.
And of course, just as there are blind WS loyalists in Canada, there are a small group of blind AC loyalists as well who always travel in AC Y and think it's the best thing ever and look no further than AC.com when they book their flights
Also remember that many Tango Plus codeshare flights on TG may translate into non mileage earning V and W class. There is no way of knowing till all the flights post I guess.

Fortunately AC does provide a conversion table for most of their codeshare flights operated by other *A partners, for TG it's here:

Crazy.
I am. With virtual guarantee of upgrade. T+ fares on 2012/2013 are at the level of M/U fares a few years ago which i used to book with instant J upgrade. If I ever lose an upgrade (hasn't happened yet and I fly this routing about 7-8 times a year) I am jumping ship.
No, actually AC has also significantly increased the discount Executive First fare to many Asian destinations in the past 6~9 months. It is now the most expensive amongst carriers flying to Asia (both TPAC and TATL) from North America, including CX.
Based on Allvest's post and the ease of eUpgrade, it appears that AC has many unsold EF seats on its flights.
eUpgrade Aerolotto in 2013 will be a lot more difficult for those at the 50K Altitude Elite level, having to compete not only with the 100K SE, but also the new 75K level plus those 50K level gifted from SE and life time Million Milers.

Perhaps to some destinations, but I've been looking at flying YVR-NRT this month and AC is the cheapest at ~$3.7k, which actually isn't bad at all.
