AC 787s to MEL

This reported the other day:

AC to fly 787 to MEL.

Frankly I'd be amazed if they introduced MEL/YVR without a reduction in SYD/YVR, but irrespective if they did connect to Melbourne AND with a 787, AC would get close to 100% of my TRANSPAC business, up from 50% now

This would be great.. I have not thought of using AC to avoid the UA 747 LAX-SYD.. a 787 AC service along with the advantages of better service and a much better lounge experience would be most welcome!

MEL would be a great addition to the network.

Take some pressure off the SYD flights and maybe more chance for upgrades

Couldn't they do YVR-SYD-MEL if they got approval or something?

The SYD turn is so short and timing works out so well. I would see that as a big disruption.

Probably good that AC won't get these for a while yet, given the recent 787 electrical and flexing wing fuel line issues. One would hope that Boeing gets its act together before we see this. BTW why doesn't ANA seem to have the same electrical problems?) Would certainly be nice to have another option to C6.

If AC scheduling had a hole in their head, yes they could do a SYD-MEL tag end.

Okay in the spirit of the season the above snarky comment doesn't belong.

International tag ends almost never work out because the operator rarely has local traffic rights resulting in the sector being unprofitable.

Domestic tag ends are different story because the operator can load traffic to handle the tag end.

I could see a 772LR SYD flight along with a 788 MEL flight.

Would love BNE but would embrace MEL as I invariably am connecting out of SYD to one of these. Imagine, our own AC a three class carrier!! maybe. In 2015. or later.

United does LAX-SYD-MEL, if someone is desperate for a tag end in Oz.

On the topic of tags flights: I was at the AC presser (and wrote the above AC 787 story), and we asked about a tag arrangement.

I've just ducked into my notes and here's what Rovinescu said when tag flights to Melbourne were raised.

"We've done it in some markets but we're not huge believers in that. It's a tough thing to do because your crewing costs end up making the (overall) costs more expensive. I wouldn't rule it out but it's not on the cards, it's a big expense for us, with crewing costs and utilisation of the aircraft landing costs which triple" (because you have landing costs for Sydney and Melbourne and Sydney again).

IMO Calin is just blowing smoke while in Oz ...

He says "if the opp to get another 777 came up, we'd take it and fly here"
- Right. Gee, seems like a route perfectly suited for the AI 77LR they were trying to get rid of?

He says, "YVR-SYD is the longest route we have" ..........
- Well, except for YYZHKG

I'm sure 787 to MEL will happen. I'd imagine combination of 12/week between 77W to SYD and 787 to MEL.

Cannot see 7/wk 77W, 7/wk 787 to SYD and MEL (except for Dec-Mar perhaps).

As much about LAXMEL non-stop being uneconomical for UA's B744
