Booking a trip YYZ-NRT for Dec 23-Jan 1, worth playing Aerolotto?
Not sure if I should pay the extra to play it, I do have eupgrades burning a hole in my pocket...
Can anyone see if R space is avail? I'm elite for 2012, and if I left on Dec 31, I'd definitely go for T+ so i can get Alt 50k next year, but right now I'm sitting at 35k~ and not really expecting to travel much next year outside of a RTW rewards ticket...
Dates are somewhat flexible for leaving, but probably either only Dec 31 or Jan 1 for return

Many NRT flights to YYZ or YVR are showing R=0.
Though there are only a few seats taken, they are blocking and it looks like nail biting last minute upgrade.
Clearly they want revenue and not to let one use credits.
Non-biz man season flying, so it depends on what happens at the airport.

Yes if you booked the ticket within the applicable window. so normally for an E you would have to be booking your ticket within the 4 day window to upgrade immediately (we all book more in advance than that usually) - unless you were booking a Latitude fare which could be upgraded at any time if booked with R space.
But with the AC promo http://www.aircanada.com/en/offers/a...ade_promo.html you could request an upgrade at T-7. So for the YYZ-NRT on Dec. 23 you could request the upgrade at 12:00. You would be waitlisted for this flight.
For AC 01 flying YYZ-NRT on Dec. 23 flightstats.com (a free website to use once you have signed up) shows flight availability of J/9 C/9 D/9 Z/9 R/0 so they are still selling at least 9 J seats (likely quite a few more). So possibly good chance to upgrade - but I don't know how many SEs would be ahead of you for an eupgrade. For your return flight on Dec. 31 AC 02 - R=9 and J/9 C/9 D/9 Z/9 - but even if you bought this now you could not request the upgrade (on a T+ ticket) until T-7 days before your flight.

Do you mean by buying >Tango fare vs flying another possibly cheaper airline? No Tango fares left on your outbound and inbound dates so cheapest fare can be upgraded (if space).

If you do decide to play Aerolotto (i.e. T+ fare) and indeed flexible on your return date, do it for Dec 31, as you get 50% status miles bonus along with it.
With other ffps, you can clear your upgrade in advance if R space is open, but not with Aeroplan.
Instant upgrade on AC fleet (not AE, not codeshare) at booking if : R space>1 + one of: Lat fare or inside upgrade window for your status on upgradeable fare.

Right, so
*no advanced upgrades on Tango Plus (where you are paying hundreds more than Tango)
*cannot request your upgrade until its your "window".
When I use my SWU/CR1, I can confrim an upgrade months/weeks in advance when I choose to pay extra for a W fare - or can confirm it on ANY fare on non-intl fares. Already upgraded an August flight HKG-GUM,HNL-IAD-YYZ with a single regional certificate on the lowest fare (K). No need to sweat and wait it out, get up early to apply eupgrades, etc.
sorry, i am not sure if I follow the respond about this upgrade or not upgrade qusetion from OP. OP started a thread today, Dec 16, for a target departure date of Dec 23. As mountaingrl already stated, under the current promo, OP as an AC*E (per OP's FlyerTalk profile) can upgrade immediately after ticket it today.
So, whether United will offer instant upgrade or not is not the answer the OP is looking for, not the OP can upgrade a United operated flight with OP's eUpgrade credits. BTW, it is Air Canada that offer the upgrade and not AEROPLAN.

Okay, actually that is the piece of info I obviously did not click-in when I was following the respond. Now, I am clear. The OP will need to request the upgrade at T-7 for the return.
