Not negative, but minimal value.
Just booked a PBI-YYZ return flight over Xmas/New Year period.
Revenue flight was $401 all in.
AE reward on same flights was 25,000 miles plus $169.00 co-pay.
That means AC is valuing 25,000 miles at $232.00 = less than 1 cpm.
Again pointing out the lack of value for Y rewards.

Depending on how you value them (1cpm for AE, 2cpm for UA), it really is 25,000 miles for ~$152 value. Not quite negative, but getting there!

25000 miles+ co-pay= price of revenue ticket - miles accrued. So should be:
25000 miles + $169=$401- 4000 miles. So,
29000 miles = $232.
Which will *never* yield a negative value. Precisely 0.8 cents.
I wonder, is this the way the co-pay is determined? Value is precisely equal to what I suspect AE values miles....

Did a YEG-IAH for the wife, UA flight on Aeroplan Taxes and Fees $98.46, 25K Aeroplan miles.
My cost, same flight, lowest rate, booked on UA the same day $924.81 ( of which $137.81 was taxes and fees )
Comparing any given flight with any other flight is not accurate.
You want to establish cost/value, same flight, same day paid vs reward

Where does that extra ~$39 go? Air Canada is collecting ficticious government taxes. SCAM.

wait, since there is no scamcharges (YQ) on UA flights - and its just supposed to be govt taxes - how is it that using UA/US (or any other ffp) points the Taxes and Fees are $59.10

You need to use facts, not guesses

this is what should be charged (from United):
Canadian Security Charge $12.10
Canada Goods and Services Tax $1.90
Canada Airport Improvement Fee $25.10
U.S. Customs User Fee $5.50
U.S. Immigration User Fee $7.00
U.S. APHIS User Fee $5.00
September 11th Security Fee $2.50
So, either Air Canada is collecting some taxes, that do not apply and shouldnt be collected - or everyone else pays these on behalf of the passanger out of their own pocket - gee, I wonder which one it is.

which receipt was issued by United?
The award ticket is AC - 014 stock - and collects $98 in tax
My example is what it should be as issued by other FFPs - $59 in tax.
Somewhere in there, Air Canada charges taxes that shouldnt be on award tickets.

They are not issuing it - you are just viewing the ticket receipt issued by Air Canada. The ticket number starts with 014.
My point was - that Air Canada charges $98 in tax - which you can clearly see on the United site when viewing the Air Canada issued ticket receipt.
For the same flights - if you were to issue the award as a United ticket - it would be $59.
So the only thing youve done is posted proof that Air Canada is indeed charging taxes they shouldnt be on award tickets.
As the ticketing carrier, Air Canada is responsible to pass on the government taxes collected - which should be $59 - yet they collected $98 from you... The scam is in where the money goes - as clearly it is not required by any government agencies (since other FFPs issue the same tickets without it.)
