superelite@aircanada.ca
I'm in a VERY remote place right now so I email the Superelite desk (or so I thought) with a seat assignment request.
Response says they can't help with Flight Pass seat assignments so to call in....
Reply was from "Customer Service Agent - Aeroplan"
...?

I've been in the same situation as you too...had to call them via Skype.
PM me if you need someone to call from Canada for you.

As you have access to e-mail, presumably you have access to the Internet.
You should be able to change your seat by using your PNR via the Manage My Booking function. Not via FP.
I assume that you have meant the "preferred seats". It was not possible previously but more recently, I have been able to do so.
You have to complete your FP booking via the FP page. Then use the Manage My Booking function to pull up your booking to change your initial seat selection.

That address is manned by AP, not AC.

That would only work if the original booking was made on aircanada.com (despite all claims to the contrary). I currently have tickets booked with a travel agent and with an AC telephone operator, and had to call in for seat assignments in both cases.

You can also use Google Chat in Gmail to call, and it's free to North America (enable outbound calling in Settings -> Chat).

Are you sure about this?
When I call from Asia, I need to use a N American proxy to get free calls with Gmail.

Interesting. No, I didn't realize they restricted it via IP address. I've only tried this when in the States & PR from hotel rooms.

Skype lets you call toll-free North American numbers for free.
But if OP is in a remote place, the internet might well not be fast enough to support VOIP. I certainly remember having to email family to call airlines for me when I've been backpacking in, say, India, where in some villages you could sometimes find an internet café with slow connections not good enough to make Skype calls from.
