yyz-syd biz class fare comparisons

looking at a trip over the pond next week, with a 10-12 day turn around, thought i'd share pricing for business class fares with everything in:

AC - $12875
Cathay - $8135
Emirates - $7075

All are most direct for the respective airlines (1 stop each, YVR, HKG and DXB)

Thoughts?

You can find cheaper AC fares for sure...you are just hitting a date(s) with only J or C available.

I used flexible dates, those are D fares and the cheapest in and around those dates. A few days ago it was 2k less round trip. Pretty safe to say I will be heading over on Cathay unless something changes in the next 24 hours.

Both routes you suggest involve significant added distance/time:
YYZ-YVR-SYD: 9,842 miles
YYZ-HKG-SYD: 12,391
YYZ-DXB-SYD: 14,380

One of the perverse realities of airline fares is that often the less direct the connection, the lower the price (in order to entice people to overcome the inconvenience of many more hours in the seat).

As Dorian suggests, it appears you're trying to book on short notice and AC likely has lots of bums in J already, so doesn't feel the need to discount.

7 day advance purchase is required for some D fare... so if you move your outbound to Thursday or later you will see a diff in AC rates. A good TA can get you the ticket for under 10k depending

And if you are being flexible on routings:

CX $8137
KE $7185
QF (via LAX or DFW) $10K

Just saying...

Dorian
If you go to http://www.flightstats.com/ and under Flights go to Flight schedule, he can go to fares and get 6 searches or more to compare.

If time permits-- always consider a Circle Pacific fare in J from YVR ( around 6000.00 CDN) and add the YYZ-YVR-YYZ separately. More miles, more places you can visit etc etc.

I am not familiar with this route. However, based on my personal experience of a few other TPAC routes, AC’s discount business class fares are consistently more expensive than its competitors, from 10% up to 40%. In fact, AC is almost always the most expensive even if you’re planning 2~3 months in advance. Is AC filling those seats? I don’t know but based on boasting by one SE of near 100% eUpgrade success rate on TPAC on Tango Plus fare, it does not appear so.

I am voting with my wallet. CX's J is as good as if not better than AC's J and is cheaper. Both fly direct non-stop from YYZ to HKG. With an Amex Plat. card, I am MPC Gold.
