There is no possible excuse IMHO for sabotaging food for labor relations reasons. If the investigation finds the contamination was deliberate hopefully the guilty party is found, fired and/or charged.

I don't think it was labor relations issues that caused it.
In that case why aren't other airlines regularly getting these?

No, just an emprovement over the normal bland DL offerings. I'm not sure I believe the passenger who said he found that. I wonder how quickly he screamed "COMPENSATION". Just a new way of using an old trick
A passenger on an Air Canada flight from Victoria to Toronto Monday night had more than the poor taste of airplane food to complain about after reportedly finding a sewing needle in a pre-packaged inflight sandwich.
The airline immediately contacted its caterers to begin working closely to "ensure heightened security measures have been put in place," spokeswoman Angela Mah said in an email. No other passengers have reported similar problems, she said.
Air Canada is cooperating with police investigating the incident.
Hmmm... Pick one:
a) AC Catering is prepping for strike action and decided to act early.
b) There's a serial needle assaulter going after airline passengers.
c) Someone saw the Delta story two weeks ago and decided to cash in.

The flight was from Victoria to Toronto…….Victoria…..if the meal was made and loaded in Victoria, I think it will be easy to figure out? How many non- Dash flights leave Victoria….not many, YYC & YYZ!
But why, and its dangerous, someone can get hurt! Did the customer get a refund or a discount for the next flight?

Maybe we should now have all food go through metal detectors--this could be an enhancement!!
On a more serious note-- this is totally unacceptable and the people responsible for providing the catering should be taken to task asap.

One would have to be mentally unbalanced rather than simply disgruntled to do something like this. The article also mentioned that:
"U.S. authorities, meanwhile, launched an investigation after a number of needles were found aboard four Delta Air Lines flights from Amsterdam, The Associated Press reported earlier this month.
Those sandwiches were believed to have originated in Gate Gourmet's Amsterdam kitchen, and were to be served to business class passengers on Delta flights, according to that report."
TORONTO - Extra security guards and cameras have been added to monitor caterers at Pearson Airport who prepare food for aircraft, following the discovery of a sewing needle in a sandwich on an Air Canada flight to Toronto.
Police and airline officials are hoping the precautions will prevent possible incidents of food tampering.
A needle was discovered in a sandwich on July 30 on an Air Canada flight that originated in Victoria, B.C.
There have been four incidents in the last two months of needles being discovered in sandwiches on Delta Air Lines flights which were catered by Gate Gourmet.
Toronto workers said the food assembly area of the Mississauga, Ont., company has recently been under heightened vigilance from managers and security officials. About 60 staffers, mostly females, work in the area, packing and preparing meals for air and rail passengers.
Police suspect a disgruntled employee may have planted the needle since the workers were in labour talks at the time.
A police inspector said Monday the investigation continues and no charges have been laid.
The RCMP has taken over the investigation into how a needle found its way into a sandwich on an Air Canada flight destined for Pearson International Airport from B.C. last month.
Peel Regional Police, who initially were investigating, confirmed this morning that the RCMP's Victoria detachment is now the lead authority in the case, as investigators believe the incident occurred there.
