carriers with little or no fuel surcharges for award travel

Aeroplan fuel surcharges (YQ) collected on the following airlines:

Air Canada (AC)
Lufthansa (LH)
All Nippon Airways (NH)
Asiana (OZ)
Thai (TG)
Austrian Airlines (OS)
LOT Polish Airlines (LO)
TAP Portugal (TP)
Adria Airways (JP)

Aeroplan fuel surcharges (YQ) NOT charged on these airlines:

Aegean Airlines (A3)
Air China (CA)
Air India (AI)
Air New Zealand (NZ)
Avianca/TACA (AV)
Brussels (SN)
Copa (CM)
Croatia (OU)
EgyptAir (MS)
Ethiopian (ET)
Eva Air (BR)
SAS (SK)
Shenzhen (ZH)
Singapore (SQ)
South African Airways (SA)
Swiss (LX)
Turkish (TK)
United (UA)

*Keep in mind AC charges YQ for the entire trip sometimes, so if you do YYZ-PVG-MEL on AC/CA or YYZ-NRT-AKL on AC/NZ, even though the last two segments are not supposed to be charged YQ - AC will charge YQ based on distance of YYZ-MEL/AKL.

Aeroplan's last official statement on fuel surcharges including an important statement that all fuel surcharges are requested by AC, and not by AE or the operating carriers: All fuel surcharge amounts are applied by Aeroplan on behalf of the ticketing carrier and are passed through directly to the ticketing carrier.

Should the status of any airline on the list please post in the thread or update this wiki. Members must be signed in to edit wiki, which can be minimized or maximized by clicking on [-] or [+] box upper right of post.

I flew two LO J TATL flights last year - and both were above average, sure, its not SQ, but still leaps and bounds above AC.
Definitely wouldn't take AC over LO, but was interested in trying TK (and wouldn't mind a layover in IST anyway), and have little desire to visit WAW, is all.

Definitely agree that LO >>>>> AC. Which is tough, as I know there's a lot of complaining on this board but I actually like flying AC in J.

TK is a great option, its a longer flight for more sleep. Seats are great for two people together, and I'll take Istanbul as a stopover over Warsaw anyway

My "lack of understanding" on scam charges was heightened earlier this year when I was pricing reward tickets YYZ to Dubai and the charges were higher on a Y than they were on a J.

Hard to believe this would be related to actual charges incurred by AC, or that I should pay a higher fuel charge at the back of the bus.

In fact here is my post on that subject:

"I just priced out two reward tickets for a return trip YYZ-DXB next spring. I wanted to compare redemption levels and costs for business versus economy.

The difference in points I can understand (160,000 for two Y, 270,000 for two J), but the taxes, fees, and surcharges defy logic.

How does AC justify charging $1,439.72 on the Y ticket, and $822.72 on the J? A big difference is in the fuel surcharge - why does an economy passenger get hit with a higher (double) fuel surcharge compared to a business class passenger?"

I am guessing it wasnt the exact same routing, and the Y ticket involved a 2-way scamchargeable airline, and the J ticket had a non-scamchargeable airline in one direction?

This was back in the spring, and I didn't end up making the trip, but as I recall these prices were quoted for changing Y to J on the same routing

List of no YQ routes for Aeroplan bookings

Hello there,

This is a list of all international routes that go to Central/South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania that are available to Aeroplan members for booking low YQ (fee) award tickets going to either Canada or the USA. This list can be quite helpful when you’re trying to build a low YQ Aeroplan award ticket.

I have posted all routes that are currently operating, or will be operating within the year.

I have not posted anything to Mexico/Carribean. I have only posted flights that are ex. USA and Canada. So, flights operated by say, UA, might operate between point X and Y in Asia. Those flights have not been posted.

I developed this list as original content. This was a huge endeavour, and I make mistakes.

This list is posted on my blog.

LOT is low YQ, not no YQ

On second thought, the Thread title doesn't exactly match the original post either...

Its either Low or No; make up your mind :P

For Asiana, you should put an asterix to mark it as a bug currently in the system. Unless they plan on keeping it permanently, which would be amazing!

That's what I commented on the blog also
OZ is a temporary bug

I still don't know the extent of no YQ routes, because when I just priced TPE-ICN at 20K Aeroplan RT, Aeroplan.com still wants to charge $68 YQ per person = no bug there)

I think it was a temporary bug that's already fixed
e.g. YQ wasn't charged on LAX-ICN
