Jazz plane diverted after man steals beer

Police took a man off an Air Canada Jazz flight in Kelowna, B.C., Tuesday after a disturbance on the flight from Vancouver to Fort McMurray, Alberta forced the pilot to make an unscheduled stop.

Police say the man stole some beer from the beverage cart on the plane and tried to hide the evidence by flushing the empty can down the toilet.

Airport Communications Officer Jenelle Turpin says the pilot made the decision to land in Kelowna and call in the Mounties.

When the plane landed the RCMP took one man away in handcuffs, while questioning two others before releasing them.

The plane then continued on its flight.

It never ceases to amaze me the stupid things people do that get flights diverted. I guess a dunderhead in the sky is no different than a dunderhead on the ground.

One in the sky can be much more dangerous than one on the ground!

Excellent.

Now lets hope he gets the bill for the diversion too.

It's a bit extreme to divert for something like this. Couldn't they just have had the cops waiting at the destination (YMM)?

It's possible though that the situation on board was much different.

Another (random) thought - what will this guy get charged with? Theft under $5000? Public nuisance? Reckless endangerment? Uttering threats (I assume he did this)?

Since the flight was YVR - YMM I guess it's a transborder issue and therefore falls under federal law and not provincial.

Makes no difference. He'd be charged with something under the Criminal Code.

I'd suspect he was on a T fare. And checked "no aeroplan miles" so he could save the few bucks.
