If you do a search, there are some long detailed threads on this subject here with plenty of good info.
Personally I like to rent a car and drive myself. If you are used to Africa, that is the best way.

I agree the Intercon is the best choice. I have stayed there many times and usually get rates under $200. Nice pool area and gym, with steam and sauna. Good for getting over your long flight. And it is right in the center if you want to walk around shopping or hit some bars and restaurants.

Nairobi Int. Airport [Terminal 1 Intl arrivals] burned down [Aug 2013]
http://www.washingtonpost.com/busine...40d_story.html
Simply astonishing, though not surprising (could have been terrorism considering it was the anniversary of the US embassy attack). Even more shocking is that they had no ability to actually stop the fire, due to lack of fire engines. Africa's busiest airport now closed until further notice!

BBC has an article about it. Fire contained. Evacuation underway. Casualties not known at this time.

BBC: Nairobi airport closes as fire crews tackle blaze
Existing FT thread from earlier:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...port-fire.html
The interior ministry tweeted that an evacuation of the entire airport was under way, with only essential personnel remaining, but said the fire had been contained.
There have been no reports of any casualties and the cause of the fire is not clear.

Does Delta have any operations at NBO? To the best of my knowledge Delta was never granted permission to fly to Nairobi. Hope everyone made it out of the fire; looks pretty nasty.

But this is Nairobi. so not surprising about the lack of services to those of us who have been there. But would be hard for any fire service to control. Would Cairo be any better ?

Time to ask KQ. Some of the flights that were to land at NBO went to Mombassa. As a wild spectulative guess you may end up in Mombassa (better than Nairobery anyway)

The fire is really serious. Thanks @rwoman, for the BBC link.
Here's the link to the LA Times report: http://www.latimes.com/news/world/wo...,6431754.story
I was actually in NBO 3 weeks ago and looking at the pictures I must admit that it's scary to think I could have been trapped there had I been traveling 3 weeks later. Hope everyone made it out safely. Having traveled through NBO, I can say that the airport isn't in the greatest shape though. I was in Unit 1 (which also caught fire, apparently) catching my EK flight to DXB.
